Volunteers Needed Saturday, July 21 to Install Duluth’s First Public Disc Golf Course

The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Commission’s Disc Golf Planning Committee seeks volunteers to help install the area’s first public 18-hole disc golf course. A work day is scheduled for Saturday, July 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to install holes 1-9. Please meet on the disc golf course site, accessed from the lower overflow parking lot of Lake Superior College’s Trinity Road campus. The course is entered through the metal gate and down the gravel path. Due to motorcycle classes being held in the lower overflow lot on Saturdays, please park in the LSC main east parking lot.

Volunteers are asked to bring wheelbarrows, shovels, steel rakes and pitch forks to move gravel and wood chips to the throwing tee pads and disc golf basket locations; loping shears and hand saws to clear for throwing lanes, park benches and picnic tables; post hole diggers for ground sleeves and sign posts; and plenty of drinking water, as none is available on site.

Recreation Area/Disc Golf Course Under Development

The City of Duluth is developing a new recreation area and disc golf course adjacent to the LSC Trinity Road campus. The new recreational facility, which will be located on City-owned land just south of the the main entry to the campus, is scheduled to open this summer. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, but instead of using a ball and clubs, players use flying discs or Frisbees™. The object of the game is to complete the course in the fewest number of throws.

The project is being developed in cooperation with Duluth/Superior Area Disc Golf Clubs, an organization that is raising funds for completion of the project. For more information, contact Jim Topie, jtopie@gmail.com.
