Beginning in January, Lake Superior College will offer a new series of online computer certification courses intended for individuals who are preparing for computer industry certification exams.

A series of four Cisco Network Associate (CNA) courses will prepare enrollees to take the Cisco Certified Networking Associate certification exam.  Students will gain a thorough understanding of networking principles and get experience with Cisco routers and switches, which will enable them to plan, implement and manage local and wide area networks.

Another series of four Microsoft System Administrator classes will prepare participants for the exams needed to obtain Microsoft Certified System Administrator certification. MCSA professionals have the ability to manage and troubleshoot networks running Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Courses to complete the 14-credit Cisco sequence and the 13-credit Microsoft sequence will be offered over the span of two semesters, beginning with the start of spring semester.  All classes will be offered online, making them convenient for computer professionals currently in the workforce.

The new offerings will be LSC’s first to use virtual server technology. The technology provides an alternative to traditional networking laboratories, allowing students to work from home and eliminating the need to attend scheduled sessions in the college’s labs.

“Virtual server technology, available through our e-Campus, will make it possible for busy information technology professionals to access these courses and prepare for certification exams that will advance their careers,” explained Tom Tonkin, LSC’s dean of business and industry.

According to Thomas Gustafson, an LSC faculty member who developed the new online offerings, “Virtual server technology is quickly becoming widely adopted throughout business and industry.  Exposure to this emerging technology will greatly benefit students enrolled in the courses.”

The classes are being offered through LSC’s Lake Superior Connect e-Campus, www.lsc.edu/connect.  For more information, contact LSC student services at 218-733-7601 or enroll@lsc.edu.
