Lake Superior College’s Student Services were the recipient of an Award for Innovation in Student Affairs Programing at this week’s Minnesota State Colleges and Universities awards program. Lake Superior College was recognized for restructuring student services and creating a student relationship management system. Each student now works with only one advisor throughout his or her time at the college, making it possible to meet students’ needs more quickly and effectively. In the first three years of the new system, student retention has increased by 12.5 percent.

“Processes were reviewed and restructured to strengthen advising relationships and to reduce student ‘run-around,’” explained Peter Wielinski, LSC’s Dean of Students. “It took the entire student services unit as well as representatives of many other departments to develop our new approach, so this award belongs to a lot of our staff members, past and present.”

The award was one of several given by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system recognizing outstanding achievements in educational programs and student services. The award winners were selected by a panel of academic and student affairs administrators. Recipients were given awards in four categories for work they did in the 2007-2008 academic year. A complete list of recipients is available at www.mnscu.edu/media/newsreleases/current/article.php5?id=31.

“These awards recognize the outstanding work by many individuals and various colleges and universities to deliver high-quality programs to our students,”? said Chancellor James H. McCormick. “They also demonstrate the many creative ways that our faculty and staff employ to continuously improve our programs and services.”?
