muralframe2.jpgMark Nelson with Riihiluoma Construction and members of the Local Ironworkers #512 worked through snowy conditions to install the massive steel framework that will hold Wenzhi Zhang’s 15 x 25 foot ceramic mural. Ironworker Brent Harju is seen on the cherrypicker. Nelson was impressed by the precision of the installation. After surveying for levelness, the framework was off by only an 1/8 of an inch. “Gee, that’s great,” he joked.” We usually have to call in the carpenters to get things level.”

The relief sculpture, named “Stele,” will span two stories. It is made of 120 individual stoneware ceramic tiles that will attach to the steel framework. The mural features many familiar Duluth landmarks including the old Central High School tower, the Aerial Lift Bridge, and the Depot. The project was funded by the Minnesota Percent for Art Program through the Minnesota State Arts Board. The program funds the acquisition of art to be displayed in state buildings that are accessible to the public.
