Recreation Area/Disc Golf Course Under Development

The City of Duluth is developing a new recreation area and disc golf course adjacent to the LSC Trinity Road campus. The new recreational facility, which will be located on City-owned land just south of the the main entry to the campus, is scheduled to open this summer. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf, but instead of using a ball and clubs, players use flying discs or Frisbees™. The object of the game is to complete the course in the fewest number of throws.

The project is being developed in cooperation with Duluth/Superior Area Disc Golf Clubs, an organization that is raising funds for completion of the project. For more information, contact Jim Topie, jtopie@gmail.com.

    I am glad to see Duluth getting a disc golf field. This is awesome! I think it will be in a great location for students like myself. It’s good to see this come about. I’m from Rochester where we have three courses to play on. I hope all will try this fun sport.

    I read in the UMD newspaper that it is going to be an 18 hole course. Does anyone know when it is going to be done?
    By the way, St. Schoolastica arleady has a frolf course, too. It’s only a nine, and it’s a little “ghetto” because the school gave the guys who made it a really small budget, but I think they did a pretty good job with what they had to work with. The obstacles are fun and challenging, check it out.

    Great progress is being made, thanks to the volunteers helping out. This course would not be here without you.

    1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12: Nine holes are now fully playable with throwing pads, throwing lanes and baskets all in place. Will come back after 18 hole course is in to add short pads, 2nd pins, better brushing, more defined walking paths, additional gravel and wood chips, etc.;
    4, 5, 6 are still on City Project “Hold” but has temporary markers; pins were installed today.
    13 which is the washed out area, was cleared 09/07 and is ready for finish work and installing of pad;
    14 – Will be adjusted more toward the creek….It was moved as it will break up 3 repetitive straight holes down the sewer line. It will be an added challenge as a double dog leg in the woods;
    15 – Rock bluff face, cleared and looks great, will be further worked on this Saturday;
    16, 17 are almost done with the help of the Hibbing Disc Golf Club last weekend;
    18 is all set and just needs a basket. Scheduled to dig holes Saturday then pour 17 and 18 at same time during next week.

    We are always looking for more volunteers every Saturday 8:30ish till around 4:00 PM. Just show up if you can help!

    The Grand Opening of Duluth’s first public course, Miller Creek Disc Golf Course, will be at noon, October 22, 2007. We will meet at hole #1, which is adjacent to the lower Lake Superior College parking lot.

    At that time, all 18 holes will be fully playable. Duluth! Get Out and Disc Golf!!

    The vision of the Duluth Park and Recreation Commission’s Recreational Disc Committee, is to install 3 additional disc golf courses of various playing levels. Please call the Duluth Parks and Recreation Office if you would like to help accomplish this goal or be on this Committee.
