(PINEROLO, Italy) – Team USA, led by skip John Shuster of Chisholm, put a golden finish to the 2007 Winter World University Games (WWUG) with a 9-4 win over John Hamilton’s Great Britain rink Friday afternoon to win the competition.

Shuster (Chisholm, Minn.) and teammates Jeff Isaacson (Gilbert, Minn.), Chris Plys (Duluth, Minn.), Shane McKinlay (Hibbing, Minn.) and Kevin Johnson (Mapleton, Minn.) capitalized on a key miss by GB in the sixth end to score four and break open a really tight game.

“We thought we should have beat them the first time so it’s nice to come back and show them who really was the better team,” said Lake Superior College Student Chris Plys. The gold medal won today was the only gold medal the U.S. delegation won at the 2007 WWUG.

The women’s team, led by LSC’s Jessica Schultz, did not fare as well, posting a 3 and 6 record and failing to advance to the medal round.

Congratulations to both Plys and Schultz and all their teammates. They are excellent representatives on our national team and we are proud of them.
