Army National Guard officers Lieutenant Commander Rick Gerdes (right) and Chaplain Major John Morris (center) spoke to LSC staff and faculty about the emotional, physical and spiritual challenges of leaving and returning home after being deployed, trained and serving in Iraq as citizen-soldiers. The presentation was part of a state-wide education initiative to help communities understand and support returning veterans. Jean Pehl, LSC registrar, (left in photo) organized the event.

Don Pfiefer of Central Lakes College discussed the state-wide initiative he is coordinating to make higher education institutions more veteran-friendly. This includes five universities and eleven colleges in the MnSCU system which will host Veterans’ Service Centers to provide a single point of contact for veterans and their families. Lake Superior College will host the new regional center with Jody Kiminski, currently with LSC Student Services, managing the Veterans’ Service Center.
