On Compassion

“We want to protect ourselves from an awareness of rags with voices that make no sense and scream forth in inarticulate rage.”  I chose this sentence because I believe it is what most Americans feel when they see homeless people.  The writer’s thesis is that people sometimes ignore the problems in society in order feel better about their own lives.  I believe that we make our own destiny.  Nobody is going to hand out success, sometimes we have to take what we want.  Bad choices can leave people in some pretty tough spots, but that doesn’t mean that they deserve pity.  I know this may come off as a rough opinion, but as adults, we have to make the right choices to succeed.

Don’t Dumb Down the Military

“Imposing  a draft on the military I served in would hurt it  grievously for years.”  I agreed with this quote because I see the volunteer force as a lot of people who want to be here.  There are so many people that do not care about America’s troubles and think that we do not have the right to go to war in responce of being atacked.  If the draft is imposed, more than likely a good number of these people would end up in the military fighting for a cause they do not believe in, and more so, a cause they do not care about.  The writer’s thesis is that a fighting force of people who want to fight for the country they love is much stronger than that of a force made up of people who want others to do the work.  He supports his thesis with many examples of how his volunteer troops performed and he uses many good details.

Just Walk on By

“To her, the youngish black man - a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket - seemed menacingly close.”  This quote stood out to me because it really shows how people, women especially, viewed black people at some times.  I believe the author’s thesis is that blacks are viewed as problems in society rather than contributors to it.  He supports this, in detail, with the stories of people avoiding him in the street as he walked down it.  I like to think that we have come a long way since times like these.  Though, I think that living in northern Minnesota, we just don’t see it as much.  Farther south, it is a bit more prevalent.  I really have no solutions, I am just glad we live where we do and people don’t have as much of an issue with race.

The Truth About M&Ms

“Just like Mars Candies keeps coming up with new varieties of M&M’s, there are countless varieties of students.”  The thesis to this essay is that there are many different kinds of students and they can be related to tsty chocolate treats! (I like that as the thesis anyway)  He uses a ton of support by talking about each of the different types of students, though I don’t necessarily think that is that cut and dry.  I can see a couple different types of M&M’s that fit me as a type of student.  I have a desire to learn things and have that “peanut” inside me, but I can also see the “krispie” too.  In high school is was a krispie for sure, though I have always had the peanut somewhere inside.  Though I have changed and hope that the peanut is starting to show, I have a deep fear that the krispie in me may show when I can least afford it.

Response to “Societal Suicide”

“Marriage is the traditional building block of human society, intended to both to uinite couples and bring children into the world.”  I chose this quote because it is the best sentence I have read that explains how I feel and doesn’t (I hope!) come off as offensive.  I know that this is a very touchy subject, but I have to say no to the same sex marriage.  That’s not to say that homosexual people should be deinied the legal rights that heterosexual couples recieve.  I believe that marriage is something sacred and is a religious issue more than it is an issue of legal rights.

The Men Carry in Our Minds

“We don’t try to lumber on alone, like so many wounded grizzly bears, the way men do.”  This quote stood out to me more than the rest because I have often thought of this same issue.  I relate it to the way women always talk about their feelings and the way men kind of keep it all inside.  I have often wondered why women feel the need to talk to others about their feelings, to me it’s a  little personal.   It can also be a bit depressing talking about your emotions all the time, knowing when people are feeling badly and such.  I would just prefer to put a smile on and go about my day!  I believe the point Sanders is trying to make is that we, men and women, don’t ever really look at both sides of the story when it comes to things like sexism.  I think that if you understand others views on issues of that nature, whether you agree with them or not, you’ll be much better off.

Identity “The Dare”

“The secret to diving under a moving freight train and rolling out of the other side with all your parts attached lies in picking the right spot between the tracks to hit with your back.”  When I read this sentance it really made me wonder if this guy really made it out with all of his limbs or if he did it at all!  Durring the reading I found myself more excited to find out what happened to the author rather than thinking about what he was trying to say.  I think this particular essay might make people think a bit more about what they are doing and why.  I believe he was trying to say that we sometimes do some pretty stupid things to ”fit in” rather than being ourselves.  I don’t know if he taught me anything right away.  To me it was just a really entertaining story.  I didn’t even stop to really read into what he was writing until I took another look at it.

TRUE and NOT SO TRUE

On my way to work, I sometimes like to drive at least ten miles an hour below the speed limit just to aggravate drivers that may be running late.

When I was in the first grade, my desk got flipped over almost weekly by Mrs. Perpich for being a “disgraceful mess”.
