                                                            Ideal Career

Narrow Topic: Social Work

            The ideal career that I best qualify for is social work.  The reason why I chose this field is because I’m experienced in working with social workers.  In this field I will be working with mentally ill and/or chemically dependant people.  I qualify for this job, for I myself have dealt with addiction and mental illness, and I know how to accommodate support, housing, resources, treatment, and therapy for people who need it.  The main reason I want to do social work is because I have compassion and sympathy for mentally ill and chemically dependant people.  My personal experience with drugs, alcohol, and mental illness has enabled me to see the signs of drug and alcohol use and I’m able to see the symptoms of mental illness.  People who use alcohol and drugs tend to not take care of their responsibilities adequately.  They sometimes neglect their hygiene, are late for work and/or school, and are slow to pay their bills, and often forget to go to psychiatric, therapeutic, and regular doctor’s appointments.  How well a person does on their independent living skills determines what kind of placement they will be put in, whether it be a half-way house, a corporate foster home, a semi-independent living situation, a more structured housing, or their own apartment.  By further schooling in college and active internships, I feel one day soon I will be completely ready to fill a position as a social worker.
