“Bowling”? by Jessica Tomlin (Persuasive Essay)
Whether throwing strikes and splits in moonlight bowling or getting paid for good bowling, the sport is great when one is bowling with one’s friends. Two weekends ago, Karley, Suzie, and I went moonlight bowling at County Lanes in Duluth, Minnesota. Karley went up to bowl when all of a sudden she was on her rear end. The people in lane next to us started to laugh, as did Suzie and I, but somehow Karley threw a strike, getting her three dollars. My mother and father taught me to bowl as soon as I could pick up the ball. My friends love to go bowling, so they always ask me to go with them almost every weekend. I have bowling class from Lake Superior College, and I have been requested to play on some leagues. People should try bowling because of the challenge, people, and relaxation.
Bowling can be a challenge. I have been bowling for many years and took a bowling class a couple of months ago, and I still cannot get a perfect throw. For example, the second week in my class, after my teacher told me to straighten out my wrist and pinky finger, I tried for almost three weeks in a row. My average went down, and he was amazed, so he told me that I could go back to how I was before. Another difficult aspect was thinking I had a perfect left-hander back-up ball for a strike. For example, I threw a left hander back-up ball perfectly down the lane and all of a sudden it missed the “King Pin”? (First Pin). Therefore, I practiced repeatedly to hit the “King Pin,”? and for the life of me I couldn’t hit it that day or the next. I have bowled for a long time; however, I still have challenges on the lane.
Good bowlers are interesting to watch. Wacky people are great to watch when they bowl. For example, about a month ago, my friend Corey and I bowled at Skyline Lanes, and a couple next to us were of high caliber, maybe in leagues, for they had shoes, balls, and wrist supporters. In almost every frame, there was a strike or a spare from them. Then the woman threw a horrible ball, and it hit only the ten pin, and she turned just about kicked the ball returner and yelled, “F*****G B***H”? so everyone could here. Everyone around her, including me, were all laughing at her. As well, league bowlers have very interesting forms. For example, Krista and I were watching a women’s league a couple of months ago. The ladies we were watching knew how to bowl, and they would do side steps, jumping up and down and twisting. Krista and I tried them out the next time we bowled, and everyone around us was laughing when we attempted to do the side step bowl, and we tripped the bowler next to us. Our teacher saw us accidently trip him, and Krista and I had to stop. Meeting and watching new people bowling is great and interesting.
Bowling can be relaxing. Throwing a ball down at the pins is like hitting one’s stress. For example, I just broke up with my boyfriend, and my friend suggested that we go bowling since she knew how much I loved to bowl. I was super mad, and she really didn’t want to hang out with me, but she stuck with me. After the fourth frame, I was happy as a bell, since I pretended that the King Pin was my ex-boyfriend. Listening to the ball hit the greased up lane is relaxing. For example, I worked nine days in a row, with school and homework. My friends asked me to go with them bowling; they could tell I wasn’t having the greatest day in the world, but they still wanted me to go with them. They were waiting for me, and after I took ten steps in the bowling alley, I started to smile, and they asked, “What is up with you?”? All I had to do was step in a bowling alley, so whenever I am crabby they bring me to the closest bowling alley to make me happy. Just listening to the noise or thinking something was something else, as with the King Pin being my boyfriend, makes bowling relaxing.
Bowling can do wonders; people can learn bowling whatever age they are. I hope I can still bowl when I am seventy years old. When bowling, one meets new, interesting people, and I learned now to relax through all of the challenges. That is why people should pick up bowling or even try bowling once in their life: it’s a great experience.
