“Big Red”? by Curt Johnsten (Illustration Essay)
During the worst blizzard of the century, Big Red and I became stranded in the woods, unable to leave because of the eight-foot high snow mounds that buried us. Five days later, the weather cleared up enough for us to find our way home. I purchased Big Red for $4,500 when I was fourteen years old; he was with me for almost six years before he sadly passed away. My truck, Big Red, went through many ups and downs with me with his support, power, and generosity.
With his support, Big Red always he cheered me up when I was down. Red kept my mind busy with projects. For instance, when I became frustrated that I had been fired from my job, I needed to clear my mind, so I started to replace the brakes in Big Red. When I had his brakes replaced, I was no longer frustrated about my job loss. Big Red comforted me when I was sad. To illustrate further, when my dog passed away, I was depressed and needed a friend. No one was around to ease my pain, so Red and I went for a drive on some back roads around Minong, Wisconsin. Before I knew it, I had already forgotten about my dog’s death. Big Red always cheered me up by occupying my mind and with his company.
With his power, Big Red pulled me out of many tough situations. My truck could plow though swamps! In one incident, I had been lost on my way to a friend’s house and decided to pull a wide U-turn on a dirt road when suddenly I was stuck in a six-foot deep swamp. I flipped Big Red into 4-wheel drive and easily pulled right out. Big Red could also drive in deep lakes. For example, I pulled up to Lake Pokagama to admire its spectacular view. My brother Ken and I began to horse around. I played a joke on Ken, thinking we were rolling into the lake uncontrollably, but then suddenly, we sank into the lake! After I put my truck into reverse and put the pedal to the floor, Red pulled us right out of the lake. My truck has pulled me out of many situations with his power and capabilities.
With his generosity, Big Red helped people when they were in need. Big Red gave strangers a ride to safety. One day, I was on my way to school in mid-December and passed a car on the side of the road with two flat tires. A few miles down the road, a person was walking along the road, so I stopped and asked him if he needed a ride. The man accepted the ride to the next town and called a tow truck to come get him and his car. Big Red also uses his power to help others. To illustrate, I drove to work during a snowstorm in February, and a car with a woman and children was stuck in the ditch. I pulled over and ask her if I she would like me to pull her out of the ditch; she accepted. I put a chain on my bumper, connected the other end to her bumper, gave it a tug, and pulled them right out. Big Red helped many people with their troubles due to his extra seats and his power.
Big Red was a great companion throughout his life; he helped me on many occasions. Big Red helped me through troubled times by occupying my mind and providing friendship. Big Red’s power pulled me though some of the weirdest scenarios with his power and capabilities. Big Red helped people in need with his extra seating capacity and his enormous amount of power. Red may have been just a truck to some people, but he was more than a truck to me. He was a great friend, and I will always miss him.
