A sign at the Saigon airport. This is the box where you can unload your disallowed items from your carry-ons, unforcefully! Correction! This is from the airport in Tokyo, which is why there are Japanese characters on the sign (9/24/06 edit).

And you didn’t get into trouble for taking the photo? I’ve been threatened by uniformed men with guns for taking photos in airports and train stations in Asia!

Good question. Before answering, I took another look at the sign and realized that this can’t be from the Saigon airport, since there are Chinese characters on the sign rather than Vietnamese.
I haven’t been asked to stop taking pictures in either Vietnam or China. However, taking pictures of people (like the security guards) is much more problematic and frowned upon than pictures of signs which don’t seem to bother them. BD

Correction #2: those aren’t Chinese characters, they’re Japanese. Now I’ve got it straight - I took this in the Tokyo (Narita) airport while flying home from Vietnam in Oct. 2006.
If anything, taking pictures like this in Japan is less of a problem than in most other Asian countries.
