Writing Topic

I admit, i am a little dumbfounded on what i should write for this assignment. There are so many things that could be possible good topics, but there are also so many that could drastically suck. I think that for this topic i may write about businesses, and in that i mean the types of businesses there are. Even more narrow than just that, partnerships versus corporations. I’ve worked for non-profit, partnerships, and corporations, and i have found that “sticking it to the man” is not always a good idea because corporations have rules for a reason: Things are fair when there are rules. But there is the chance of domination and restrction, so partnerships and other types of businesses are good for this reason. I’m not sure where i’m going exactly, but i guess i’ve got a start?

Rogerian Rhetoric

I didn’t mind reading the handout on Rogerian Rhetoric, it was in fact relatively interesting. When you think about arguments in the long and the short of things, developing multiple perspective and explaning them is a really good way to win an argument, ofcourse, your argument would have to be explained the best i suppose, but i guess it it all in the eye of the beholder as well. I guess the only question that i have about rogerian rhetoric is how do you make a case for an idea that can be shot down immeadiately? Is there another mechanism that helps build your argument besides, or, in addition to rogerian rhetoric?

Interviewing a Dead Person…

If i could interview someone who was no longer living, i would have to pick Alfred Hitchcock. I’m quite the movie buff, and i enjoy a lot of his work, in addition i hear he had quite the odd personality. He was a very smart individual, so i’m fairly certain that the interview would be fulfilling. However, if it was going to be pleasent i really could not tell you. Another challenge would be to predict whether he would be cooperative.

However, for the sake of my sanity, let’s just say that he was cooperative. I would first ask him if he liked being dead. He was a morbid person of sorts, and included death in his work. I would want to know what his take on being dead was, and if he could change the death scenes in his work if he would.

I would than ask him if he liked dabbling in television and movies, why he hated actors so much? It does not make sense to choose a profession where you don’t like the professionals to be involved and furthermore, how could you hate when profession of people that could be as broad as those who act, or perhaps, maybe there is a common thread among them that I don’t see. If there was, i would politely ask him to point it out.

Lastly, i would ask him if he were alive today, would there be a place for him in modern cinema? Many directors contribute him as an influence, but would he even want to be among the likes of them? Would he like the films of today or would he scoff at the simplicity of the plots, or maybe he would have something positive to say…

I think interviewing Alfred Hitchcock would be awesome, whether i would ask the right or wrong questions i really cannot say. One thing i know for sure is that it would most certainly not be a waste of time.

Chapter Six

Chapter six was about news stories. i thought it was really helpful because it was full of interesting pieces and useful examples. i especially liked the section on photojournalism because of the examples.  The brief section on “Understanding News Stories” was probably the most helpful. The questions that were asked under “Newsworthiness” were key points that i think everyone should learn, especially if you are to be writing a news story. The chapter also talked about objectivity, which is also really important for writers to become aware of because it is so easy to write stories from the “I” perspective, which leaves you with an extremely biased piece and potentially not credible piece of writing.

I also thought the part on research paths was good. In this day and age people are way too quick to use information that they google off of the internet, not realizing that everything that you get off of the internet is not always 100% true, especially if it is a .com. I think it is good to be aware of what a primary and secondary source is and how to locate other documents that would assist you in drafting a piece of writing.

All in all i thought the chapter was easy to understand and helpful, and above all, not a complete waste of time.
