All Quiet on the Western Front

Why do we find ourselves thinking of Nazis when someone says German soldiers? Why do we consider the entire German people to be murders’? Is it too much to ask to ask to look at what really happened in Germany? The German troops of World War One were not murders’, horrible monsters that committed Genocide. They were men the same age as us, human beings that were fighting for their country. These were men just as brave as our troops fighting in Iraq. “All Quiet on the Western Front” directed by Delbert Mann, shows the true life of a German soldier. All Quiet on the Western Front shows college students the non-American side of war.

We as Americans take so much pride in who we are, When we join the military we view that as taking the biggest step in being patriotic. That is just as the same in Germany. In World War I the German people took up arms not because they needed to invade, but because the Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany followed, and obeyed a treaty between Austria and Germany, of which the US has had terrible track of doing. These men that took arms to defend the fatherland were doing the exact same as after the incident involving the Twin towers, and many men joined the armed services because President Bush called for action.

The German soldiers had lives the same as us, they had mothers, fathers, siblings, and loves, some even had children. But when they heard the call to defend their fatherland, they took arms and did what brave and honorable men would do. All Quiet on the Western Front is a movie that shows the passion and nationalism that the German people showed. Not only does this great movie give examples of what people do for their country, but what they will do for one another. As the soldiers soon learn, war is not as glorious as the movies and propaganda show it to be. For example, the main character has to watch, as his friends that he has grown up with die right beside him. All Quiet on the Western Front is a anti-war film, and does a great job at showing what really happens when men join the military. though this movie is old we can still relate it to events that are happening today. Not only does it give us a pride that our friends and comrades put their lives on the line by joining the military, but it as well, shows that the people that we fight in battle are people just like us. We can relate this film to the Iraq war. We have many troops that do not support the decision to be in Iraq, but are proud to be in the armed forces to protect and uphold the American way.

All Quiet on the Western Front is by far one of the best war movies ever made. Though it does not have the bloodiest fight seems , nor does it have great “300” graphics, but what it does have is the truth of war, and a good example of the faces of German soldiers. What the movie shows even more is that Though Germany has had its dark moments in history, as well as the United States, Germany is a nation of great and honorable men and woman. Not only does the men and woman of Germany deserve the respect and honor that they have fought for, but they deserve the honor of patriotic, not the label of Nazis.

This book has many good traits about it that I think will help all college students. By looking at this book, and seeing that war is not only a damaging process during the battle, but also afterwards as well. Not only to the army It is damaging to the individuals that are just like us as well. This book also shows that even if the enemy lives thousands of miles from you, they are human just like you, and live lives just like yours.
