My feedback from the movie St. Elmo’s Fire

13 12 2007

There were two powerful quotes that I liked throughout the movie. The main quote that stood out for me was “College is like a four year delusion to keep reality out.”

This quote is trying to say that what you learn in college should prepare you for the future. The truth is they keep the reality stuff out. College doesn’t prepare for certain reality consequences. Like if you can’t find the job that you went to school for, they won’t hire you, or its just not for you. Whatever you go to school for is never certain of what you’ll become, Just make sure its the job for you or have a backup plan for the side incase it dosen’t go your way.

The other quote that I thought was meaningful was “Sex is not love.” I know that everyone has a different perspective on this type of subject. To me sex is just lust or the physical attraction. Love is a more meaningful word. Love takes time to develope it dosen’t happen overnight. It takes time to develope a relationship and develope the word love. I know for some people sex is a very meaningful moment for some peoples life, but it all depends on the person you are and what you belief. In other words I do believe what that quote says.”Sex is not love” but love is different towards other peoples eyes.

My Challenging Semester

12-11-07

Comp 1106

Comparison/Contrast

During this past semester it has been a challenged. Coming from Writing One and Two, I wasn’t quite sure to expect. But I did know what kind of teacher to expect. I knew he was funny guy, his expectations, and what kind of teacher he is. What I knew to expect was his grading, homework, and what his role is in the classroom.

One homework assignment that was challenging for me was writing the persuasive essay. It wasn’t hard to pick a movie that every college student should see. The movie I picked was Supersize Me, the only reason I picked this movie was because we could all learn to eat better, after watching this movie. What was hard about this subject was to have enough information to write about throughout the essay, and to have an opposition side to the essay too. See I am a person that doesn’t like to argue with anyone. I enjoy listening to your point of view, but if I have something to say I will tell you about my opinion.

During all of the essays we’ve wrote I’ve notice a few errors that I need to work on. Throughout the essays, I’ve notice that I am rusty on comma splices and deciding on which words go where. One big error that I need to work on is my past tense words, and how I like to repeat the same words over. The last and major error that I need to improve on is deciding which paragraph should leave the essay, and keep in mind am I explaining enough information for the reader to understand what I am trying to say.

One major role that helped my essays was the peer reviews. I have to say that I am not the best writer, but I do have some strengths. The way peer review helped me was with some of my major mistakes. Some of the major mistakes were my past tense words, words that I should stop mentioning, and which topics that I should rephrase. I have to say that without the peer reviews I would have not gotten the grade that I received. The group that I had helped me a lot. My group would give me suggestions and advice that I should follow. I remember when Jodie peer reviewed one of my papers she told me, that I shouldn’t use the word things in my paper. After she mentions that to me, I slowly stop using that word in my essays. As you can tell, I still use it but not as much though.

Overall, this semester has been successful. I’ve learned how to write better college papers, and using the right words. I’ve noticed my strengths and weaknesses. Each time I write a paper, I am going to keep in mind what I’ve learned throughout all the essays and the peer reviews.

Watch Your Health

When having five dollars in my pocket where should I spend it? Should I spend it at the grocery store or McDonald’s? At a grocery store I can buy a loaf of bread, some deli meat, and this would last me a week. If I spend this at McDonalds I would just get one meal out of it. One meal only contains a Beverage, one container of fries, and a burger. But if I wanted to save this for another day it would go bad, or the food would get cold, and wouldn’t be good to eat anymore. I have to say that I would have to go for the grocery store. I say this because it would last a week, and probably would be healthier for me too. According to the movie Supersize Me, each day one in four Americans visit a fast food restaurant. This movie tells everyone about fast food. I think every college student should see this movie at least once. I want to help everyone to developed better healthy eating habits.

Every college student has it hard to pay for food with little money that they have. I know at some fast food restaurants it’s not expensive, and can’t turn it down. I know having errands to do, and need to get something quickly to eat that fast food is the best way to do it. What if you ate fast food for a month? What will happen? According to the movie Morgan Spurlock did all of that. He ate fast food for thirty days. He ate McDonalds for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday. He had to eat everything on the menu at least once before the experiment was over. In this movie the doctors told him that this may be dangerous to his body. Before this movie began his health was above average. He was 6’2, 185 pounds, and below average of eleven percent of fat. During this experiment he seemed more depressed, and it was hard for him at one moment to finish a meal, but he did eat it. After the experiment was done his health was not the best. His cholesterol passed the 200 by a wide margin, he put on twenty-five pounds, his body fat increased from eleven percent to eighteen percent, and his liver was on a red alert also. It took him a year to go back to his previous weight, and it took him eight weeks for his liver to go back to normal.

According to the movie, sixty percent of Americans are overweight or obese. One major cause that Americans deal with is Obesity. Obesity is also linked to hypertension, Coronary Heart Disease, Adult Onset Diabetes, Stroke, Gall Bladder Disease, and etc. This cause is leading to death in
America. I say this fact because Americans are not watching their health, until it’s too late to do something about it. The World of Health Organization has declared that obesity is a global epidemic. During the movie, they mention about diabetes. They mention how one of three children that are born in the year of 2000 will develop diabetes in their life time. Being a diabetic is hard for some people, but that’s how they have to live. The movie also mention that diabetes will cut to seventeen through twenty-seven years off your live. I know you probably think this is not true, but it is. This only follows someone if it’s hard to follow a food routine. If you’re that kind of person it would be hard for you to live life as a diabetic.

According to the movie, McDonalds feeds more than forty-six million people a day, this is more than the entire population of
Spain. McDonalds represents forty-three percent of total
U.S. fast food market. One fact that I thought was interesting about McDonalds is that two beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun contains two grams of fat. According to the Health Organization site, actually two grams of fat is not the only thing that goes in someone’s body when they eat fast food. What else goes in that person’s body is carbohydrate. Carbohydrate contains four calories, and a gram of protein contains four calories. A gram of fat contains nine calories and more than twice the amount of the other two.

One bad part about eating healthy there is always a routine that every person follows. Some people like to look at a food label charts to look for some important ingredients that they like to follow. When looking at this chart they look for the calories, cholesterol, sugar, and grams of fat. Doing this takes time and adding it all together. Some people add all these ingredients together to see if they hit under 1000. If they do its healthy, if not they will not eat it. Eating healthy is hard work, but it does take time. Sometimes eating healthy cost a lot of money too. It all depends on what kind of healthy diet you would like to do. It all depends if a person wants to avoid dairy products, avoid meat, or avoid anything with sugar. All the healthy ways to eat does cost money, but that’s the price that everyone has to deal with. If I want to live a life to the fullest I would have to avoid fast food, find a way that I would like to eat, and keep it as a routine for life.

I think our class should see this movie and discuss because everyone can relate to it in one way or another. I believe this because everyone eats and that’s how we live. I think some of our classmates could learn about some facts that we didn’t know of. I know that not everyone likes documentaries, but we could all learn from this. It could teach us how we can change out eating habits, and eat to a more healthy way. While eating a more healthy way, everyone can see some great effects. Everyone might be able to see that they’re not tired, more energy, and their emotions changed for the better. This is why I think our class should discuss this movie in class, so we can learn to keep our body’s healthy and live life to the healthiest way.

My Family

Argument

Section 06

11/4/07

Racism has been around for a long time. In the United States today there isn’t much racism, but it’s still around. Not every family is the same. Looking at most families you probably think that they’re all one nationality. The truth is that most families today have different nationalities. I am glad that my family has mix races, and were not all the same race. I have to say Inter-racial families cause other people to show their hidden racism.

Here is a story that happened to my family years ago, which deals with some racism in it. One day my niece Natalie and her mom Sherri went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to go and see her friend Amy. When they got to Amy’s house they crashed after their long drive. The next morning, Sherri and Amy left to browse through the town and catch up. They left Natalie at Amy’s house to baby-sit Amy’s five kids. Natalie was old enough to baby-sit and to be left alone. The kids were playing in the house for awhile, until they wanted to go to the candy shop up the block. Natalie and the five kids walked up the street and went to the shop to get some candy. Natalie, who was around thirteen years old at the time, was very scared in a place that she wasn’t familiar with. Natalie and the kids got their candy, and left the shop. Then they started to walk back home. They were a few houses away from Amy’s when a couple of African Americans came around the corner, and started to get in Natalie’s face. These kids were about seventeen years old and they weren’t acting their age. They started harassing my niece Natalie. These kids would ask, “Why are you in our neighborhood whitey?” She was also asked, “Why she was with those black kids?” Natalie would just shrug her shoulders and keep walking towards the house. In a way she was ignoring them, but she still heard them. When they got home Natalie told her mother what happened, but she didn’t believe her. People don’t believe racism is still around, but it is. My niece was harassed, and was stereotyped at the same time.

People still have a problem with the idea of inter-racial families. One summer my mom, my nephew Kirby, and I went to Park Point for rummage sales. Kirby, who is African American, held my hand while we walked, and we got looks from people around us. We mostly got looks from older ladies, and they would keep staring at Kirby and me. I wasn’t sure what those looks were for. It could be because I’m young and they thought Kirby was my child, or that he is African American. I can’t believe that inter-racial families are still around. These were the thoughts that were running through my head. All I hope that the second thought of mine was wrong.

I have two nephews that are African Americans. People don’t really look at them differently, but some people still look at them differently. One day my nephews Kirby and Kyjuan were being themselves. They would play outside on the block that we live on and ride their bikes back and forth, and just laugh. They would always play tag with their bikes. Our one neighbor isn’t very social, and one day he told my mom to keep my nephews away from his house. The truth is that he is racist. He never pay-attention towards the boys, when his girlfriend would baby-sit the kids. I just have to say our neighbor is different, and that’s how he is going to be. I just hope he will change his thoughts about my nephews, and start playing with them like they do with the other children on the block. Just because all the other kids are all the same race, doesn’t mean that their bad kids. These kids are very happy boys and they’re a blast to hang with. I hope my neighbor will change for the better. Only time will know.

I do believe that my family is different, and that’s what I love about my family. The best part about my family is that we are unique, and we have different nationalities. I am blessed to have such of amazing family. I am happy that my family is not the same and I can learn from them. I hope that I can teach my children about the wrong of racism and my experiences. Racism is a big deal in the United States. Everyone should just accept the fact that everyone is different and we all have to deal with it.

Millie’s Family Memories

In this essay I am going to write about a resident that lives at Keystone Bluffs Nursing Home. Recently our class took a trip to interview some of the residents that live there. I was paired up with a girl in our class by the name of Ashley. The wonderful person I interviewed was Mildred Luck, and Ashley interviewed Mildred’s husband Lucky Luck. Mildred’s family is her entire life, so I decided to focus my paper on her relationship with her family and husband.

Mildred was born on September 6, 1915. She likes to be called “Millie” instead of Mildred. Millie has six sisters including herself. There names are Elva, Floy, Mary-Francis, Junita, and Mattie-Ruth. Millie was raised by wonderful parents. She was extremely close to her mother and her father. Living at home with her parents was good, but other times it was difficult. She didn’t live in a very wealthy environment, but they lived on what they could. Her dad was a hard worker, and her mother was a hard working housewife. Family means the world to Millie. Raising a family with love, dignity and sharing that life with her husband made Millie’s live meaningful.

Millie has some great memories living at home with her sisters. One of her favorite memories was climbing their elm tree. This tree was in front of their house this might not sound like a big event; but she enjoyed all the simple things with her sisters. She remembers a time when one of her sisters got stuck up in the tree, and she couldn’t get down. Her mom noticed that one of her sister’s was stuck up in the tree, so she told Millie. Millie had to climb up the tree and get her down.

Another great memory that she had was with her sister Elva. They loved walking down near the stream. One day they were walking by the stream, when they lost their footing and fell in the stream. They were all wet. When they got home, her parents saw them all wet. They were in big trouble because they were so wet and they didn’t change into dry clothes right away.

One of her best vacations she has ever gone on was with her sister Elva. Millie and her sister traveled all over the United States, and Elva paid for Millie to go on the trip with her. Millie said, “I had a blast and I will never forget about traveling around the United States with my sister.” Millie isn’t quite sure how old they were, but she knows that she’ll never forget about that trip. After listening to her stories about her sister Elva. It seems that Elva and Millie have a great relationship; it seems like that they’re the best of friends.

One night at a Cocktail Lounge, She and her sister Elva decided to spend their night at the lounge. This lounge was near their home, and it was a great place to hangout at. While they were at the lounge they were hanging out with these two soldiers. Her sister Elva was flirting a lot, Mildred didn’t like that. Then later in the evening Elva and Mildred excused themselves from the table to the restroom. Millie told Elva to stop flirting. When they got back to the table the two soldiers weren’t there. They still decided to sit at the table they were at. They enjoyed each other’s company. Then these two nice looking sergeants came to the table and ask if they would like some drinks. Elva and Millie couldn’t deny the offer. When the two sergeants walked away Millie told Elva that one is mine. Elva told her that she likes the Hispanic one. That night Millie would never forget. She remembers the guy she liked was such a gentlemen. She also said, “That night instead of calling him Maurice I called him Lucky, because I am lucky to find a guy like him.” Millie knew he was the one. After a few dates, they were officially a couple. They went on a vacation together. During the vacation, Lucky went down on one knee and he asked, “I think we should get married, what you think?” She couldn’t say no, so obviously she said, “Yes.”

While they were planning on a wedding, they decided to have a small wedding, and have their immediate family there. They didn’t have any arguments about how big the wedding was going to be. Millie chose the pastor. She actually was close to this pastor, so she wasn’t nervous around him. She asked her friend who is a pastor, “Would you marry me.” The pastor said, “I would love to, but I’m married.” Millie said, “I didn’t realize what he said until after he said it.”

In Nashville, Tennessee 1949 was the year she got married. It was everything she wanted. A small wedding, a Catholic Church, the pastor she wanted, and all of her immediate family there.

One year passed by and they started to have a family. They had a little girl named Jan. They always loved that name; they didn’t really have a reason why they named her Jan.

Millie remembers one of her favorite memories about Jan was when she was three years old. She remembered that she brought her to see Santa Claus. Santa sat Jan on his knee, and started talking to her. She wasn’t really paying attention to him. Jan was looking at his beard and started to pet his beard. Then she said to his beard, “Pretty Kitty.” Millie said, “It was adorable, with some laughter.”

The year of 1957 came and they had a baby boy on Friday the thirteenth. It was a good Friday for Millie and Lucky; and they named him Jeff.

One great memory that she has with Jeff was when he was young he cut a big piece of his beautiful blonde hair. Then a couple days later he saw his Uncle Jerry and his uncle is completely bald. He told Millie and pointed to his uncle’s head, and said, “I didn’t do that.” She said, “It was cute.”

While Lucky was at work and the kids were at school; Millie would do some house and yard work. Lucky and Millie never really ever needed a babysitter. If they did, they would ask one of Millie’s sisters to baby-sit. Her sisters were always pleased to baby-sit.

Millie and Lucky do have grandchildren now; they have two grandsons from Jeff, and one granddaughter from Jan. They’re happy for their children that they have some kids of their own. They hope everything they taught their kids will go to their kids. They hope that they would teach them to be respectful adults, and have well mannered. Millie always told Jeff, “I want you to turn out just like your father.”

Millie adores her husband. She states that he’s the best husband. What she loves about her husband is that he is such a gentlemen, and he is very honest. She isn’t the best cook, but Lucky loves it.

I’ve learned so much from Millie. I did enjoy getting to know someone new. She taught me that true families are always there for you. When I saw her daughter Jan with her mom Millie, her eyes just sparked up with joy. I can tell that Millie loves her family more than anything in this world. Millie is such a sweet lady, funny, and very thoughtful. I am glad that I got to know Millie, and what I’ve learned from her I am going to keep and live by.

“A War For Us.”

31 10 2007

” In three years I learned more about standards, commitment, and, yes, life then I did in six years of university.”

“The men and women on active duty today and their compaions in the National Guard and the reserves- have seen the willingness, and that of their families, to make sacrifices for their country stretched thin and family abuse.

This quote supports this essay a lot. It tells that the soldiers were promised but eventually it came into a lie. So their were soldiers that got disappointed also families. The essay also tells that cause of the draft; result of young americans being sent to fight and die in a war that became a disaster. While the soldiers were in Irag thousands of soldiers died and thousands were lied to.

Logic-Using Induction

30 10 2007

Evidence:

-Keys in her hand

-Not really smiling

-Car almost in the water, but was saved by the boat.

-The car is over the parking blocks.

Conclusion, I think that might of happen is maybe she thought she was in reverse but instead she was in drive. I think this because she is over the stones, and I can’t see what else it could be.

Just Walk On By

23 10 2007

“After dark, on the warrenlike streets of Brooklyn where I live, I often see women who fear the worst from me.”

I chose this quote because sometimes when you walk by someone in the dark, you get a nervous feeling from passing them in the dark. Its more scary to walk in the dark then the daylight. It all depends on the first impressions, without getting to know the person. When I pass someone I just smile and say Hi. Some people just ignore looking at the person that they passed, and just look at their feet. I think this quote is improtant I think its best to describe the essay and don’t think about first impressions, stay positive, and don’t be scared.

” As I swung onto the avenue behind her, there seemed to be a discreet, uninflammatory distance between us.” This quote is telling basically what the big event of this essay is about. This thesis is telling the readers that there was a victim in this incident and the two people in the story felt uncomfortable with each other. They didn’t feel comfortable at all.

The next time I see mildred.
