My topic that I picked is on Ritalin.

*Re-evaluating the way Ritalin handed out and prescribed. *Re-evalutaing how children are being diagnosed.

1. Is there an alternative way of handeling the childs problems?

2. Is Ritalin necessary to use and when is it?

3. Is there an underlying reason for the childs actions? What are their health, family and home life background?

Rogerian Rhetoric

The Rhetoric way of writing an argumentative piece, seems to me to be very effective and more so than how one would normally write about their argument. When You write about just one side of the subject you seem close minded and un educated. You need to have a strong base for your beliefs on the subject you are arguing about and to do that you need to know both sides of the story to come up with a conclusion. For example, when the police are investigating a case they do not take one persons word or side of the story as the truth. They interview all of the people who were involved, people who knew them. They look at the evidence and then which ever story is closest fitting to the evidence they examine that. In the end they find a conclusion but it takes a lot of work to find because they have to look at the case from everyones views. This is the same with the Rhetoric way of writing. You have to look at the issue from a bunch of different angles and without a bias. You have to be respectful of the opinions or other ways of doing things to get the underlying value of them. It may be hard to not try to win the argument but you will have better feedback and more people willing to listen if you focus on figuring out the best way to resolve the issue.

I really think this is a great way to resolve a conflict and to have people listen to your opinion, even if they disagree. The only thing I am having a tough time with is trying to find an issue with which I can write on and how would be make it effective. What would be the best way for me to set up the paper so it flows properly?

Lucky Luciano

If I could pick anyone to interview it would be Vito Genovese…or better known as Lucky Luciano. He is one of the most powerful Italian based mobsters in American history. I think that the history and the reason behind the Mafia is very interesting and that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Since Lucky Luciano was one of the largest Mafia bosses I think that he could give me the most information on why he did what he did. He could give me information on not only the history of the Mafia but also history of Italy and its politics. I would ask him how he got into the buisness and how he made it to the top as one of the most respected amoungst the mafia community. I would ask him why he thought it was important to be apart of the Mafia and how it changed his life. I guess the biggest questions would be what it ment to be apart of the Mafia, what you had to do and is it worth it? What is the real reason behind it?

I think that it would be great to be able to see a side of Italys history from the eyes of the Mafia. They started this organization because of the government in Italy. The government was not paying attention to the south and so the southern Italians thought they needed to take it into their own hands and do something about this. It would be a great look into the past and the culture of Italy. This is not a lifestyle that I am familiar with and I would love to get a peek into the lifestyle of a Mafia king.

A Bad Report Card

This article is talking about how American high school students, mainly 12th graders are not proficient or excelling in reading and math skills. The argument is stating that the government is not doing their part in the education system. The No Child Left behind Act and the Higher Education Act that have been put in place has not been enforced by the government. The writer uses statistics to back up the argument, such as low test scores and how they have changed through out the years. The writer goes on to state that the national standards should be put in place for students and that the states should raise the bar for teaching qualifications. The writer does not hold a very strong argument because they do not define it well, what the reason for the low test scores are and there they do not provide sources for their statistics.

Family Second

This editorial is asking the question of who should live and work in the U.S. The writer states that it should be a priority that the workers that are coming to the U.S. are entering legally and with just cause. The writer says that most permanent resident visas (green cards) go to foreign born relatives of the U.S. and only a small percent of this is connected to employment. He is saying that this is not right because there is a shortage of visas for scientists, engineers, mathematics, doctors and nurses.  He goes on to say that our economy depends on these skilled immigrants but we have no visas for them. The visas that are being handed out are going to people’s family, which extends to that families family and so on. The writer of this editorial is also an author of a book that is related to this subject and therefore he has credibility when it comes to his research and how he uses his statistics or examples of how our economy could improve if we changed the laws on immigration. He provides valid points and backs these points up with statistics and thoughts.

News Story

News stories influence many individuals, especially when it is a national event. In comparison, local news stories have a huge impact on the surrounding community. Local news gives people a chance to better understand events that are taking place and things that can affect their every day life. To write a good news story it has to fit certain guidelines. And for the news story to be successful one must write about an event that is recent, must affect numerous individuals and it must be interesting. The story needs to grab the reader’s attention. Another very important point of writing a news story is the writer leaving out his or her own bias or opinions on the subject. The writer needs to balance the story so that they explore all sides of the story. That includes using interviews, observations and related documents. When you use interviews you get various perspectives, which will result in a deeper understanding and will in turn reach a larger audience. Observing the details of an event will give the story life and the readers will be able to relate to it. Documents are a useful tool that will give you facts which will enforce the story. Using a quantity of different sources help the writer balance the story and gives the reader a broader perspective, plus more information so that they can form an educated opinion of their own. The way that I see it, is that you have to get the point across and then back up that point with credible sources and information. Always answer the questions “what?” and “why?” Choose the angle that you want to pursue and run with it.
