Lake Superior College to Offer Computer Certification Preparation Courses Online

November 18th, 2008 by Gary Kruchowski

(Duluth, Minn.) –Beginning in January, Lake Superior College will offer a new series of online computer certification courses intended for individuals who are preparing for computer industry certification exams.

A series of four Cisco Network Associate (CNA) courses will prepare enrollees to take the Cisco Certified Networking Associate certification exam.  Students will gain a thorough understanding of networking principles and get experience with Cisco routers and switches, which will enable them
to plan, implement and manage local and wide area networks.

Another series of four Microsoft System Administrator classes will prepare participants for the exams needed to obtain Microsoft Certified System Administrator certification. MCSA professionals have the ability to manage and troubleshoot networks running Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Courses to complete the 14-credit CCNA sequence and the 13-credit MCSA sequence will be offered over the span of two semesters, beginning with the start of spring semester.  All classes will be offered online, making them convenient for computer professionals currently in the workforce.

The new offerings will be LSC’s first to use virtual server technology.  The technology provides an alternative to traditional networking laboratories, allowing students to work from home and eliminating the need to attend scheduled sessions in the college’s labs.

“Virtual server technology, available through our e-Campus, will make it possible for busy information technology professionals to access these courses and prepare for certification exams that will advance their careers,” explained Tom Tonkin, LSC’s dean of business and industry.

According to Thomas Gustafson, an LSC faculty member who developed the new online offerings, “Virtual server technology is quickly becoming widely adopted throughout business and industry.  Exposure to this emerging technology will greatly benefit students enrolled in the courses.”

The classes are being offered through LSC’s Lake Superior Connect e-Campus, www.lsc.edu/connect.  For more information, contact LSC student services at 218-733-7601 or enroll@lsc.edu.

July 16-25 Wood Fire Ceramics Conference Features Regional and International Artists; Public Invited to Community Events

July 12th, 2007 by Pat Toland

Media contact: Janet Blixt, (218) 723-4743, j.blixt@lsc.edu or Gary Kruchowski, (218) 733-7649, g.kruchowski@lsc.edu

For immediate release: July 10, 2007

(Duluth, Minn.) – A first-ever wood fire ceramics conference organized by Lake Superior College will feature demonstrations, lectures, exhibits, and ongoing wood fire pottery making by artists from China, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Participating artists include Brock Allen, Holly Anderson, Dorian Beaulieu, Tonya Borgeson, Dick Cooter, Dan Edmunds, Craig Edwards, Bill Gossman, Sara Haugen, Elaine Henry, Bob Husby, J.D. Jorgenson, James Klueg, Karin Kraemer, Lu Pinchang, Huang Qiang-Hua, Lenore Rukavina, Lou Xiao-Fen, Jacob Zeiher, and Wenzhi Zhang.

As part of an international exchange program at Lake Superior College, twenty artists/teachers and art students from Beijing and Guangzhou art schools will participate and teach at the conference.

Wood fire kiln pottery is an age-old tradition traced back thousands of years in Asia and the Middle East. Because of the variations in kiln temperatures and influences such as wood ash and smoke, the resulting product is highly unpredictable. Surface color and texture vary greatly in wood fire pottery. This volatility makes the process a magical one.wenzhizang.jpg

Presenter highlights include Wenzhi Zhang, considered one of the most important contemporary Chinese ceramic artists working today. Zhang has exhibited her work from Paris to New York. Zhang studied at the Guangzhou Fine Art Academy where she now teaches in the ceramics program she started. Her work is held in public institutions, galleries and private collections across the globe, including Lake Superior College, Guangzhou Art College, and the Ministry of the Culture of China. She is currently working on a commissioned sculpture for the new LSC Academic and Student Services building to open this fall.pinchang.bmp
Professor Lu Pinchang, a high profile Chinese ceramics instructor, will also demonstrate and discuss his work.
