(Duluth, Minn.) – The public is invited to Lake Superior College’s Entrepreneurial Campus Initiative (ECI) Kick-off to be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27. Guest entrepreneur Greg Benson of TrueRide, Inc. will speak at noon about creating companies in the Duluth area. A second session will feature entrepreneur Billy Shelton at 5 p.m. who will share his entrepreneurial experience.
Display tables will be available in the Commons hosted by businesses and agencies who are supportive of entrepreneurship and who promote entrepreneurial activity in the community. Pizza will be served.
The LSC Entrepreneurial Campus Initiative will be offering a certificate in Entrepreneurial Studies beginning in the fall semester of 2007.

(Duluth, Minn.) — Thinking about returning to or starting college for the first time? The Lake Superior College Diversity Committee, the Minnesota Women’s Foundation and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will host a one-day conference at Lake Superior College on Saturday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to offer support and information for women who want to return to college or have never been to college.
Organized to recognize Women in History Month, the conference is designed for the person thinking about going to college for the first time or as a re-entry adult. “Many of our presenters have experienced difficulties in their lives going to college and completing their degrees,” said Nancy Schumacher, LSC conference contact. “Their stories and advice will be inspiring for other women.” Session topics include financing college, navigating paperwork, learning styles and life goals.
The conference will offer resources from area two- and four-year colleges and community organizations, including Lake Superior College, the College of St. Scholastica, the University of Minnesota Duluth, the University of Wisconsin-Superior, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, and the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College, to help women learn more about the undergraduate and graduate degree options. Information on traditional classes, online classes, evening and weekend classes, late start options and accelerated programs will be available.
Karen Diver is the featured keynote speaker. Diver is the newly elected chairwoman of the Fond du Lac Reservation. This position serves as the chair of the tribal government and of the reservation’s corporate and economic development boards. The Fond du Lac Reservation is the largest employer in Carlton County with 1600 employees and more than $300 million in assets.
Previously, she served for three years as the Director of Special Projects for the Fond du Lac Reservation and for eleven years as the Executive Director of the YWCA of Duluth. She is the immediate past chair of the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota and a member of the Blandin Foundation Board of Trustees. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Minnesota, Duluth and a master’s degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Lake Superior College is seeking comments from the public about the College in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accrediting agency. As part of its participation in the Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP), the College will undergo an on-site, Quality Check-Up visit May 2-4, 2007, by a team representing the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The team will review the institution’s ongoing ability to meet the Commission’s Criteria for Accreditation.

(Duluth, Minn.) – Lake Superior College’s Disability Services will host a presentation on Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism. Peg Ferguson, ISD 709 Autism Specialist, will be the guest speaker. The event will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 28 from 12:00 noon to 1 p.m. in Room W2648. Cookies and bars will be provided. The public is invited to attend.
Asperger Syndrome is a pervasive developmental disorder commonly referred to as a form of “high-functioning” autism. Individuals with Asperger Syndrome are considered to have a higher intellectual capacity while suffering from a lower social capacity. (Duluth, Minn.) – Beginning Feb. 27, Lake Superior College kicks off a new series of presentations on topics of local and global interest. The “Issues and Ideas” series features Lake Superior College faculty making presentations about topics of broad interest from their fields and leading Q&A sessions with the audience. Informal discussions will be held at lunchtime and more formal presentations at 7 p.m. Evening events will take place in the LSC Library, Minnesota Room. Presentations are free and open to the public.

(Duluth, Minn.) – Lake Superior College requests qualifications from professional artists to create public artwork for the new Academic and Student Services addition on its main campus in Duluth, Minnesota. The project is open to all artists or artist teams, working in any media.
The college seeks timely, highly visual, original artwork to reflect the educational mission and/or community connections of Lake Superior College that can become a signature piece for a college with a large and thriving arts program.
The artwork will be sited in a prominent location or locations inside the new building. The deadline for applications is March 5, 2007. The commission will be awarded in May 2007.For complete details, please see the request for qualifications at www.lsc.edu/publicart.
