Surgery and the Nutty Professor

Often times, when I’m bored, I find myself watching silly shows like Doctor 90210 or Extreme Make-over. I people go under the knife for different reasons. Some people choose to have surgery because of health issues or serious abnormalities. Others have surgery to feel more confident about them selves to appeal to the world. Some people return multiple times because they find another imperfection constantly. A lot of these people are college students. High school years teach students the need to fit in and look good like it’s a necessity of life. Going into college and having control of medical decisions, students are still tormented by perfection. I find that plastic surgery and special nips here and there is used very lightly. The 1963 version of The Nutty Professor demonstrates the addiction to self perfection and the undesirable results of addiction.

Julius Kelp, a nerdy chemistry professor, becomes addicted to a formula that gives him those good looks and idealistic dancing and singing talents. When he revealed himself to the hip, public hangouts he was named Buddy Love. Stella Purdy, the girl of his dreams, begins to fall in love with Buddy. She soon realizes that he is an arrogant jerk. To Stella, Buddy is nothing at all like Julius Kelp, her chemistry professor. Julius becomes addicted and after a few nights with his formula the consequences begin. Buddy’s voice constantly swings from dreamy to nerdy. Everyone begins to notice is strange behavior. Soon after Buddy realizes the serious effects of his formula he reveals himself as the one and only Julius Kelp.

Fixing those imperfections can really boost ones confidence for the better or for the worse. Face it! Everyone has a flaw that they are scared to show. It can be a personality flaw or a physical, visible flaw. So some may wonder, why not spend your life savings on fixing that horrific bump on your shoulder or that extra flab around your waste. People have this yearn to perfect before they can show, otherwise they feel tied down and distressed over the matter. When surgery takes place on that problem area one may be happier and confident because they have nothing to hide. Yes it is a good thing that people can feel more confident; but sometimes it is taken too far and one can earn a real big ego and become arrogant and careless toward others. Buddy Love is a good example of this situation. You can tell he really enjoyed being good looking and talented. Some people would ask, “What’s wrong with feeling confident?”  After a while Buddy’s ego got to Stella Purdy. She didn’t like how ignorant he was towards her and how he flaunted her like a prize possession. She didn’t like how arrogant he had become after all the appraisal given to him.

Surgery can also get out of hand and create conflicts. Julius Kelp looses himself to the need for perfection and soon becomes undesirable. His voice swings around like he hit puberty all over again. He appears fidgety and sweaty almost like he was on some sort of a drug. All the effects of the formula could not be hidden. This relates a lot to the addiction to surgery and the noticeably, undesirable affects. Surgical addicts become the opposite of what they wanted. When they become addicted to surgical procedures like lip plumping, face lifts, breast augmentations, and nose jobs, consequences can happen. Yeah a bad surgery can be fixed; but after so many the procedure changes, the perfect result cannot be achieved because of weakness in areas due to too many surgeries. Some people have lips that look like plastic. Others have faces stretched so far across their skull that it makes them look like an alien. Speaking of aliens, Michael Jackson is a good example of over doing the nose jobs. Michael was good looking, before he had surgery. Yes he still looked okay after a couple of surgeries; but after too many jobs he frightens children and has to stay out extreme light.

This movie is great for college students to see to. People like the Nutty Professor need to realize that it’s not the outside that counts. I can look at the most beautiful man I’ve seen in my life and get to know him as a jerk He then becomes very unattractive. Yet, I can find the ugliest man and be attracted to him because of his great personality. Instead of endangering themselves everyone, including high school, recovering college students, should learn to live with what they have and get over those tiny imperfections that only bother ones self.
