Essay 2

High School versus College

College is, in many ways, better than my four years in High School. It is far more entertaining and convenient than High School. All though some rules were made for the best, I’ve had my differences. Staff would always tell students where to go, what to do, how to dress, and how to act. The transition from restriction to freedom was great.

College is more flexible around my life style than High School. At my and many other high schools, students did not have a choice of when their classes were. Every week day, I had to wake up, go to school at a certain time, and stay for so many required hours. Even with four alarm clocks going of in my ear I struggle to wake up early. College is much more convenient because the choice of time gives me a chance to go to class at a later time. Also, I am a workaholic; the time choice gives me a chance to schedule around my work schedule. I sometimes find myself scheduling school around work because of the type of help that is needed at my job. During high school, I could not do that at all. I couldn’t choose to have night classes instead of morning classes.

In college, there are fewer requirements and more options.  High school has many requirements for all students before they graduate. It requires many physical education, history, scientific, mathematical, and English credits, leaving less freedom of option. At college, I chose my major with the knowledge of requirements that I need. A student may major in a subject where they may or may not need great math skills. There are also a wide variety of classes that can be taken for fun. For examples, I don’t think I would be making metal art in a low budget High School.  Unlike high school, students are not limited to so many credits in four years. If the student’s daily schedule can allow another class, they may take those classes that they’ve yearned for.

Acceptance and Freedom of Expression is practiced more in college. In High school, there was a strict dress code that even restricted ridiculous things like hats, bandanas, and head-bands. Students were also not allowed to use cell phones or laptops.  The first day I stepped into my college, I noticed the wide range of clothing selection. I saw people with all sorts of head gear. Because I was used to teachers screaming “Take that off!” it almost seemed taboo to see other students in class with a hat on. I do admit it was pretty amazing seeing students use their laptops and cell phones at school and not being punished for having them on school property.  High school was also full of very judgmental people; whereas, college student don’t seem to be. I remember being in high school and hearing judgments being tossed around about Cindy’s horrible hair style and Bob’s ridiculous piercing. In college, I have noticed different styles from dressy to grungy and there seems to be a lack of judgment in the air.

Going from high school to college is a great transition. I have been given more advantages in college than high school. It made life easier and fun because I am doing things that I really want to do. I am choosing where I go, when I want, how I dress, and how I act without worrying that someone will holler some snotty remark. It is a great experience to get out and be what you’ve dreamt of.
