The information covered in chapter 6 was very useful and helpful. I liked how there were detailed sections for each part of a news story. The book explained in detail and gave examples of how you should proceed in writing that portion, and also why it should be written that way. I also liked how they used real news stories from the past, and then dissected them pointing out and explaining each part and why it is written how it is.
The sections of this chapter that are going to be most useful to me are the parts on objectivity, sources and quotations. On objectivity, it is easy to forget that when people read a news story, they are expecting that info to be accurate. I have never written a news story type of paper, but had I not read this chapter, I would definitely have made the critical flaw of incorporating my own opinions in it.
Citing sources has always been a problem for me. I tend to not cite them accurately or correctly. After the reading, this seems especially important because no one is going to listen to what you have to say if your sources are incorrect, incomplete or lacking whatsoever. The reading shows and tells how to properly cite different types of sources. I also learned of a few different types of sources that I would not have thought of before. In writing a paper, generally the sources come from text, from online or books. With news stories, there are interviews and observations, which I think will be useful in writing this upcoming paper.
How to properly use quotations will be especially helpful. I never realized how many different ways there are to quote somebody, and how many little rules there are for properly doing it.
There were many informative and structured concepts in this chapter, but I feel as if they are there to stand as merely an outline. I can’t imagine how bland and similar all journalism (more than it already is) would be if that shred of human emotion was missing in any piece of writing. Even in a dictionary or thesaurus, there are pictures placed in there no doubt placed and chosen by people. There is also another part of me that thinks that the journalism should be as bland and objective as possible, seeing as this is how we could seemingly get the most accurate facts. It is no secret that when a writer composes a piece, they are no doubt putting their own spin inot is, making it somewhat bias, no matter how good your intentions are at being objective. Overall though, this was a good chapter and will serve as a good base for writing a first time news article.
