I plan on writing about global warming. I choose this topic because it’s currently being debated a lot and there are many different views on what is really going on and how it will effect our future. It should be easy to research as well.
Research questions:
What are the causes of global warming?
What are the potential future effects of global warming?
What about the subject do people disagree about?
What is currently being done to slow global warming?

I understand that the whole point of the Rogerian Model is to find common ground and resolve an issue instead of winning an argument, but I’m still not sure of how to set up the thesis statement using this method. Would it be like any other essay where you simply state how you feel and why, or would you acknowledge the other sides views in the thesis as well? Also, I understand that it is important to acknowledge the opponents views, but am unsure about how to exactly to do it. Is it ok to write about how you completely disagree with their views and possible solutions, or should you leave that out? If you should leave it out, how would you go about informing the readers of the opponents views?
About the next essay, I was wondering if there are any topics that are off limits this time. If yes, what are they? I’m not decided yet about what I want to write about, but I think I’m leaning towards global warming.

If I were given the oppurtunity to interview someone form the past, I would choose Thomas Edison. I would pick him because of the profound affect that his inventions had on the world. I would try to gain insight to how he felt about his spot in history. Three questions that I would ask him would be: What do you think was your greatest invention? How did these ideas come to you? What invention took the longest to perfect?

-Smoking Ban:
Banning smoking in public places is a hot topic with many people who strongly oppose or support it. It may be good for public health, but it also takes away from people’s freedom. It will likely be a hot topic for awhile whether they fully ban it or not.
-Stem Cell Research:
Like smoking bans, stem cell research has a lot of people the passionately oppose or support it. The people that support it argue that the research could potentially bring a lot of breakthroughs that couldnt come about any other way. However, the people that oppose it feel that it is wrong because those cells are people. This is hot topic where a compromise is not very likely to happen, and no matter what the outcome, a lot of people will be upset.

While reading chapter 6, I learned a lot about reporting news stories. In past essays, when reporting on news events, I never consciously thought about anything that was covered in the chapter. I’m sure my writing would have been substantially better if I had. The things that seemed the most important to me was the importance of objectivity, balance, and angle. Without which, it isn’t much of a news report at all.
However, the aspects that will help my writing process the most would have to be how to set up the body and ending of the news story. I sometimes have problems with how to organize ideas within an essay. Also, when writing, I often become stuck at the end because I can’t think of a good ending.
In addition to teaching me many new concepts, chapter 6 also helped to enforce what I had learned in the past. If I hadn’t read this chapter, the first essay would be a lot harder. Now that I have learned everything that goes into writing a news story, I am confident that my first paper will be a success.
