The Purpose of Education
“Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life.” I don’t think enough peope believe this about education. I know I didn’t when I first attended college eleven years ago. I was going to college because it was what people did after high school. Now that I am going to college for the third time in my life, I understand this statement and appreciate it a lot more. I am a bit older now and I understand life a lot better. If I want more in my life, it is up to me and my goals to accomplish this task.
I believe the thesis is “As I engage in the so-called “bull sessions” around and about the school, I too often find that most college men have a misconception of the purpose of education.” The author gives three different points of view of the purpose of education and supports his own point of veiw. One example of support for the thesis is, “It seems to me that education has a two-fold function to perform in the life of man and in society: The one is utility, and the other is culture.” Here he is stating his own point of view of what the purpose of education is.
Greetings,
I chose a different look at a potential thesis, but after you explain where you are at in life I see why you are thinking the way you do. The quotes you chose bring your idea forward with more strength. I may not agree fully, but I like your thought process!!
Hi! Unfortunatly I am a yougen, and have not had time to mold me into a wise woman; however i have had hard life lessons that have given me a much broader look on life. With this knowledge i agree with you that people are neglecting what true education is about, that they no longer have a drive in life to be educated. educationn not only for a great job, but to make more educated dicisons in life that aspire to something more as a human. nice job
