Making the Grade

This statement stuck out to me.“After the student gave his tale of woe and left, the phone rang.”The way the students contacted him right after the grades were posted supports the thesis.

The essay gave me a different perspective on how to look at my grades.  I should look at it for what it is not what I think it should be.

Dumb down the military?

“Imposing a draft on the military I served in would harm it grievously for years.”  This statement got my attention because of the unfiltered meaning behind it; also this is his thesis statement.  This statement clearly states that he believes that a draft would dumb down the military.  He backs that by suggesting that those who don’t want to be there will make no effort with the extensive training involved in today’s military, and by becoming distraction to those who joined willingly.

Just walk on by

“Suffering a bout of insomnia, however, I was stalking sleep, not defenseless wayfarers.”

I chose this sentence because it sums up the thesis and idea of this story.  It starts with a man doing a completely harmless act, yet shows the extreme it can be misunderstood.  The person in this story is the same as those he supposedly intimidates yet he is feared for his color.  He describes his understanding of the other peoples fear by using his own understanding of the same fears.  He finds it amazing that he is included in those based on his color.

Identifiable Evidence:

The parking lot is located close to the water.

There doesn’t seem to be a curb directly behind the car that would have stopped it from rolling forward.

There are no skid marks suggesting that she tried to stop.

The driver’s door is open suggesting the lady was not in it when it happened.

There is impact damage on the front of the car.

There is no damage on the rear suggesting it was pushed in by another car, but rather damage from the stress of holding it up.

The woman is dry and seems to have part in the accident.

The rope looks like it could have broken during the accident.

Conclusion:  The lady forgot to put the car in park and it rolled into the boat.  She has the keys in her hand to suggest it wasn’t running when it was driven in.

My interview

Romane Kaufmann is my grandfather.  He is my essay partner for my English class.  I have know him for as long as I can remember and always think I know him.  I am 24 years old and not until last year did I find out he left my grandma for 3 years shortly after they became parents (they are together still).  It is funny how much I still do noot know so being in the military I decided to ask him about his time in since he never gives enough detail.

I am going to ask him why he chose the Marine Corps.  I will find out how long he served and why he got out when he did.  I will find out more information on where he was sent and for what reasons.  Understanding the lifelong friendships I made I will ask if he has any or had any.  I will ask about his perspective of the Korean war in which he served.  I have never been able to get a straight answer about his job, other than it was fun, so I will press again.  To finish I will ask him would the most important thing was that he learned or took from his time.

My Grandpa

My grandpa is one of 12 siblings, he is the 3 oldest.  He grew up on a farm in Foley Minnesota were everyone had a job from the time they were 4.  I couldn’t imagine living with 12 brothers and sisters, let alone on a farm.  He has told many stories how he used to plow corn for hours on end with an old tractor that quit working every couple of minutes.  He says it was fun having so many different people in his family because he never had to worry about getting annoyed of one person for too long since there were 10 others.  He has worked many jobs in his time, traveling all over the U.S.  I don’t know how easy that would be to do today with the cost of living and availability of jobs a little different.  I would have loved to spend time traveling around like he did seeing the country working odd jobs here and there.  In a day and age where education gets you a job and credit almost being a necessity to get a house or a car there is almost no time to make that happen.

“Unlike Plains, Peanuts have something buried within them.”I enjoyed this story because of the humor that can be found in it.  I feel the writer was trying to use a lighthearted way to describe the cadies he has to deal with on a daily basis and this is a way for him to cope with it.

The purpose of education

“We must remember that intelligence is not enough.  Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education.”      To me this is talking about my life long belief that you can have book smarts, or common sense.  Only a few can combine the two.  Those with book smarts rarely know how to apply that to daily life making it essentially worthless.  Those with common sense are great until they realize they don’t have the knowledge to apply it correctly.

Gender and Orientation

“Gay ‘marriage’ supporters argue that most family tragedies occur because of broken heterosexual marriages- including those of many Christians.” This sentence is placed as a supporting fact that Gay marriage is acceptable and no different than heterosexual marriage.  These type of facts are necessary for an article like this, without them it is nothing more than raw opinion.  However, this sentence made me think about how blown out of proportion this topic has gotten.  I know gay couples have raised children in the past, but do we know enough about gay couples to put statistics together to give this claim merit?  Considering “gay couples” are not recognized by the government how much do we really know about that parenting combination?  The number of children raised in “straight” homes compared to “gay” homes is likely to be incredibly unbalanced.  There would be no way to prove that statement to be valid.  I suppose that sentence struck me as important because it has no value at all in my opinion.
