Late Night…

For some odd reason I felt the need to type a fairly pointless blog. Just something to do after midnight on a weekend. Sleep would be a good idea but I’m still so hyper from the past two days. When in a good mood it is easy to lose sleep. I just want to live. I’m living life and loving it. I’m back to school, hanging with friends, and checking out some awesome local bands. I’m in a great mood and want to pass it on to others. I live for random moments and all the little things others sometimes look over. Why not? It’s those type of things that make life fun. For now I think that’s about all I have to say. Well not really but there is so much more I could be doing right now. At some point I will sleep, dream about great things, wake, and start another awesome day.

St. Elmo’s Fire

When Amber argures that St. Elmo’s Fire demonstrates how graduation signifies the end of innocence and the beginning of adulthood I totally agree. I don’t think that many college students consider that after college they may not be successful right away. Many of us are kind of blind and in a way innocent while in college. I went straight from high school to college. The majority of my life has been school and I haven’t had a chance to learn about being an adult or living life yet. I think it will be a bit of a shock when I finish college but I hope I do succeed.

“Someday when we reminisce we’ll realize there wasnt too much we missed, and through the tears, we’ll recall, for four years we had it all.”

I liked this quote. Basically I think that people should do everything that they can and need to in college that way when they’re finished there will be no regrets and be ready for the future and adulthood.

A War for Us, Fought By Them

“If you support this war, but assume that Pat Tillman and Other People’s Children should fight it, then you are worse than a hypocrite.”

I chose this quote because I believe in what it is saying. I think the writer’s point is that any time we go to war people are always wanting someone else to fight it, especially the privileged. William Broyes Jr. even pointed out that if you look into our government you will see that almost none of them have children fighting in the war or many past wars. Privilege and money saved many from ever being drafted and that is possibly the same this that keeps them from going to war now.

One thing that could be evidence is that the block thing is out of line with the others. That could mean that she tried going in reverse and instead went forward. She could also just be drunk. However, my first idea seems more plausible because the airbag didn’t go off. Either that car didn’t have one or she wasn’t going at a fast enought speed to get it to go off.

Just Walk on By

“It was in the echo of that terrified woman’s footfalls that I first began to know the unwieldy inheritance I’d come into-the ability to alter public space in ugly ways.”

I chose this quote because I think that it accurately portrays some peoples views on race. It is such an issue that it’s been seen in the movies, or on the news. Every so often race becomes a primary issue in a news story such as with the Jena 6 and many others. There will always be prejudice and there will always be people comfortable with “their own kind.” I think Brent Staples thesis is that most people have some prejudice. Subconsiously or consiously people react to him and other people of a different race in ways that they normally wouldn’t act. He supports this with the woman who ran from him when he posed no threat. He shows this again with the woman at the jewelery store.

Currently I don’t have an exact time for when I am meeting Eleanor, however, I do know that I am meeting with her this week. During my last visit with Eleanor we decided together that I would write about her lifetime of work from the time she was a young teen until recently. This will include what she did during World War 2.

New Interview Questions:

1. What exactly did you do during WW2?

2. What happened to that job when the war ended?

3. What was your first job and what type of duties did you have to do?

4. How long, if known, did you work each of these jobs?

5. Which job did you like the most?

6. When you were a nursing assistant, what type of stuff did you do?

Eleanor Wilson

When I arrived at Keystone Bluffs I was paired with Eleanor Wilson. Eleanor is currently ninty-five years old and has spent all but nine years of her life in Duluth, Minnesota. For the nine years she was away, she lived in Waldo, Maine. Out there she would often ride horses or pick apples off the many apple trees she had. Eleanor met her husband one July and married him October of that same year. They were together until his death forty-seven years later. Although Eleanor never had any children of her own she acted as a mother to many. She grew up with three brothers and five sisters. She loves to travel and has completed the Lake Superior Circle Tour twice. Until recently she worked most of her life. Eleanor seems to be a very strong person.

My grandpa

My grandpa Harold was born in 1918 around the end of World War 1 and died when I was only five. From what my mom has told me he did many things and experienced much in his life. When he was younger he was a merchant marine and was in the Navy. He spent half his life on the boats out on Lake Superior. He would spend anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks out on the lake under the stars. My mom told me that he loved being out there and could name most of the constellations after his years out there. I would love to experience half the stuff he experienced out there. He lived his life out on that lake and loved everything about it: the waves against the side of the boat, the seemingly endless water, the stars above. That is one thing we share. Our love for nature. It is something I’d love to be a part of just like he was.
