How Come Duluth

How Come
Duluth?

After leaving high school and going to college, living at home, I felt I needed a change. Making a decision on where you want to move can be a very life changing. You need to have enough money to get you started, figure out a housing situation, and find a couple of options for job opportunities. After some careful thinking I had finally made my decision. I wanted to live in
Duluth, the city with the largest fresh water lake. I didn’t care about going to

Lake Superior
College as a specific school, but came for the excitement and adventure. Being an outdoorsman and artist/musician, I figured this is the place for me to really get down to my roots, without leaving the state.  Another reason for moving to
Duluth was my girlfriend at the time, who I was practically married to, was going to be going to UMD that same year. But for the most part I just needed to get out and explore, to try to see as much as possible as long as I live.

The outdoors has always been a huge part of my life, ever since I was a little kid. I was born and raised on an organic hobby farm, outside a small town, in the Heart-of-the-Lakes of
Minnesota. Most of my free time was spent exploring lakes, ponds, and forests, trying to find every creature I could. I also spent almost everyday of my childhood fishing and when I was old enough, hunting as well. When I was a kid my dad and I would take trips up the north shore at least every year or two. I remember rock climbing and watching my dad fly fish for steelhead and salmon as I sat their on the rocks with just a jig stick and a bobber. I knew I had to move up to this wild shore as soon as I was old enough. There is also

Spirit
Mountain which provides all the snowboarding I can get until I move out to the real mountains. There are a lot of outdoor activities in
Duluth, so I felt this would be the place for me.

Another reason I decided to move to
Duluth, but my least influential, was my girlfriend at the time. She had mentioned going to UMD here and their, in our many conversations. I would always give here reasons to do so, because I really wanted to go, but couldn’t bare the thought of being without her. Before deciding to move and go to school in
Duluth, we had been together for about a year and a half. We were inseparable and loved each other like no other, practically married. Obviously there would be no way that we wouldn’t go together.

My final reason, yet just as important as the outdoors, was the music scene of
Duluth. I had always known
Duluth to be a town where a good number of musicians became well-known. Not that this was what I was trying to do, but I figured living here may give me some inspiration on some new material as a folk musicians, considering
Duluth is a fairly folksy town. I also knew that a lot of my favorite band played in town and knew it would be nice to be able to hear them with out having to drive a couple hours every time.

Duluth I have found is a pretty happening town. I hope that most of the people living here understand and respect the true nature of this place. It is surrounded by vast wilderness, raging rivers, and of course the enormous
Lake Superior. Along with that, music and gorgeous women surround every part of this town, which definitely go hand in hand.
