My Research Topic
April 19th, 2007
My research will be on the topic of oursourcing jobs. My opinion is that outsourcing is more beneficial overall. After doing more research of both sides of the argument, I will decide which one is the most sound. I may be convinced otherwise. I will try to keep political opinions as low as possible, though they may be included in quotes.
Is Outsourcing undermining out workforce and causing a rise in unemployment?
Is outsourcing beneficial in the long run, or more damaging to the American economy?
Is outsourcing necessary to compete in the world market
Questions About Rogerian Rhetoric
April 17th, 2007
Firstly, do we need emotionally loaded words? I assume we do, but I want to avoid any manipulation or melodrama that might not be associated with Rogerian rhetoric. Also, Rogerian rhetoric forster’s sympathy toward the opponent’s views, right? If so, how sympathetic must it be? Do I need to actually prefer the opponents, or merely reach an understanding and common ground? I’m thinking the latter.
In Rogerian rhetoric, I’m assuming I need to reach a level of common understanding with opposing views, not merely an acknowlegement. Also, though I need to choose a side, even if its complete nuetrality, I should not go out of my way to determine my view is superior, only that it is a justifyable solution to the problem using research and data–just like my opponent(s), correct?
Interview with Abraham Lincoln
March 29th, 2007
I would like to interview Mr. Lincoln (say, 3 days before his assassination). Mr. Lincoln is a man I very much respect, and it would be interesting to know his thoughts on certain issues at the time. I would like to get quite a bit of information from him regarding his second term, and what future plans he may have had regarding the issue of Southern reconstruction and the fate of African-Americans.
# Questions I would ask:
Recently, you issued the so-called “Emancipation Proclamation.” Is this declaration meant to lead to Africans achieving equality, or just an end to their enslavement?
The Southern states are in very rough shape. What are your plans for reconstruction?
What do you believe will be the most difficult task in restoring order in the South?
Two Topics
February 27th, 2007
My first Topic is on the continuing U.S. embargo on all trade with Cuba. It has effectively forbidden any US trade with the nation since 1962, and has since extended to any business relations with Cuba. My argument is that this is only drawing Cuba closer to Latin America and fanning the flames of anti-U.S. sentiment.
My second is on the Iraq War situation. While I think the war is not the disaster the media portrays, support is clearly waning with no clear resolution in sight. My argument is that the occupation is becoming largely detrimental and withdrawl must be dealt with not immediately, but very tactfully
Chapter 6 in retrospect
February 6th, 2007
After reading chapter 6, I have found 3 of tips I find to be most useful in my upcoming Paper 1. They are:
1. unbiased and objective analysis of events
2. using and “inverse pyramid” type organization in order to put the most important information as a beginning summary and following up with background infomaking sure who is reading
3. Using quotations effectively in that they are relavent and are clearly labled as such in the paper.
Most weren’t new to me much, but I found the concept of balancing information in that the report contains more quote or resource so that the reader can be given the opportunity to draw his or her conclusion. given the facts presented
