For my topic, I plan to write my paper on animal rights. I am going to write about how they are treated poorly and also why they are treated that way. A research question I would use would be “What purpose does treating animals poorly serve to us as human beings?” Another question is “What are some of the things that are done to harm animals for animal testing and things like it?” Another research question would be “How many animals die each year because of animal testing?” “How are the animals treated that are butchered for people and other animals to eat?” would be another question I could use.

I think Roerian rhetoric is very useful and would get more accomplished than just traditional arguement. I think it is very helpful to say both sides of an issue instead of just one. When you say both sides of the story, the audience will think about it more as compared to when you say just one. Then the audience probably wouldn’t listen to what you have to say. I am confused about what to write after you finish with both different sides of the arguement. In the story, it talked about writing what makes your side better. I thought that after both sides have been put out there, you are supposed to talk about what both sides have in common and what they both believe in. I was also confused reading the sample essay in the handout given to us in class. I didn’t see how see talked about both sides of the issue. I thought she just talked about the one side of the topic so I couldn’t follow the paper according to Rogerian rhetoric.

If i could interview one person that is no longer alive, I would interview Rosa Parks. I would interview her because I think she was a very courageous women. She influenced a lot of changes for the U.S. She is a very interesting person that I believe I could learn a lot from. I would ask her what it was like to be treated so poorly by white people. I would also ask her what was going through her head when she refused to give up her bus seat. I would ask her what her life has been like after segregation ended. If I interviewed her a couple years before she died, I would ask her what her greatest life accomplishment was. Rosa Parks would be a very interesting person to interview to see what her life was like.

One topic that is being argued about lately is the opening of the new Save A Lot grocery store in West Duluth. There are issues surrounding it as to whether it should be union or not. There are some people that say it should be union and it isn’t. It is being picketed by people that were hired to picket it which other people think is wrong. The people that are hired to picket it aren’t even union members. There are many debates going on about it and if it should or shouldn’t be union.
Another topic is the closing of a couple Duluth Schools to help save some money. They are looking into closing Denfeld High School to help the district cut costs because of the budget cuts. Their are people in the school district that want the school to close because they don’t care and they don’t have any kids going their and then their are the people with kids in school in duluth and don’t want any schools closed. The people with the kids want to keep all the schools open so their kids can go their. They don’t want to have to make their kids go to school a long ways away if there is a school close to them.

The questions to ask yourself to figure out if a local event is newsworthy is very helpful. It made me think of reasons it would or would not be a good event. The proper way to use quotations will be very helpful especially because we need to talk to a couple other people that are at the event and get their opinion on it. The way to organize a news story is new to me. I never realized they used the inverted pyramid for news storys. It makes sense to me that they have the most important facts first then get into the details and opinions. I had never heard of the different angles that are used to write about the why and how of a story. They can be different from one person to the next but all in general answer a how or why question. It is very helpful to me to know that news storys usually don’t have long conclusions. The conclusions are usually cut off because people want to know everything in the beginning. It is also helpful to know that news storys usually end with a quotation that will impact the reader. This is all very helpful to me as I will be writing a news story about a local event.
