My Response to “Struggling for Perfection”
First of all, I’d like to say that I totally agree with the essay “Struggling for Perfection.” I think it hits all of the major points of how a woman’s body is overused in the wrong ways in today’s world. A quote that really got my attention was, “These publications are responsible for defining what is sexy and reinforce the belief that aesthetic appeal is a woman’s highest virtue.” It really made me think about those Victoria’s Secret magazines I look through every so often. Victoria’s Secret is one of my favorite stores. Even though their models’ pictures are everywhere in the store, I didn’t think of them as a “commodity.” I just saw them as pretty girls who wore the clothing well. But I can definitely see where some guys could picture them as “things.” I also chose this quote because I thought it very well defined the whole issue of women selling their bodies. I believe the writer’s point is to make the audience aware that many people take women for granted in today’s popular culture. I think she also wanted to compare the issues of “sex sells” and eating disorders as two problems we face that are being fueled by the media.
I agree with you totally. Guys these days, and not just the “crazy guys”, but some guys normal ones too, think in a way where women are viewed as “things”. A lot of “guys” are posesive and sometimes because they are beautiful. I think that the media is a big variable in the current eatting dioder and low self esteem issues.
Victoris secrets is a great store I agree as well; however, I think that the bra ( and also clothes) sizes should only be to 38 because they are neglecting a certain poulation that wasnts victoria , yet the size they don’t have ( and 38 is not that big eather). They focus is on thin people.

I agree with each point. I watch as my wife and daughter struggle with their own “imperfections”. As a male I am not as forced to deal with them due to our perceptions of ourselves. Good essay, maybe a few paragraphs to separate your ideas…..
