My Respose to “Salvation”

I am responding to the essay “Salvation” by Langston Hughes.  One quote that really stood out to me was “God had not struck Westley dead for taking his name in vain or for lying in the temple.  So I decided that maybe to save further trouble, I’d better lie, too, and say that Jesus had come, and get up and be saved.”  I think this passage really shows how influenced Langston was by Westley and how much pressure he had on him.  Langston just gave in to the whole “Jesus had come” thing because he saw Westley had done it without any consequences.  I think that the writer’s point was to show that sometimes people give in to peer pressure, because they are afraid of what people will think of them if they don’t.
