blog 5 revised

April 24th, 2007

instead of digging into the topic of gun control which i dont have that much interest in, i am going to look at the issue of steroids in professional sports and the benefits/disadvantages of them.

question 1 what benefits are there in taking steroids?

question 2 should athletes be allowed to take these protein and creatine supplements at all?

question 3 what are some of the serious health risks involved with taking steroids?

for my rogerian style research paper, i plan on taking on the issue of gun control.

Question #1 What type of rules are there in place for someone who wants to buy a gun?

Question #2 What can be done to make these rules stronger and backround checks more thorough?

Question #3 Should just anybody be allowed to roam the streets with a concealed weapon?

Rogerian Model

April 17th, 2007

While reading the booklet we received on the rogerial model of argument, i was impressed with the amount of patience it would take to actually master that technique. Americans in general like was stated in the booklet down argue to resolve things, we argue to win or lose arguments. I liked how the writer gave suggestions on how to effectively listen to another speaker who is talking about something you are opposed to, or have a dissagreement with. Holding back any judgement while another is speaking is nearly impossible when that subject is something you oppose. I really do like this style though because I am not a confrontational person in my nature at all and dont like arguing with anybody even if it is a black and white case and im right. I like the idea of coming to a common ground, and both sides giving in a little bit. The article inside of the booklet on sexual harrassment seemed a little strange to me because I guess I was never a part of that kind of stuff in middle school nor did i notice it going on around me in school.I guess while reading this, i never got a full understanding on what the argument was. Was it against the former classmates who harrassed her? Or was it about the adults and teachers who stood by watching it and not saying a word? I didnt quite get it.

Jackie Robinson

March 29th, 2007

The person that I would want to interview that is no longer living would be Jackie Robinson who most of you know was the first African American to play baseball in the major leagues. The reason that I would want to interview Jackie is because I have always been a huge fan of baseball, so obviously there is some common ground between us. I would try and get information about his childhood, and where he learned to play baseball. I’ would also try and find out who some of his role models were growing up. I would ask him questions like,”How did you put up with all the racism while playing?” Another question I would ask is, “How does it feel to be a pioneer, being the first African in the majors?” Also I would ask the question, “How did all of this affect your family?” These questions probably seem obvious, and are probably the questions that many people would ask, but they are so significant, so that’s why I’d ask them.

Chapter 6

February 6th, 2007

While reading chapter 6 in our textbook, i was most impressed with the idea of the inverted pyramid for writing a news story. I have read many newspapers in my time and have never realized that the main idea of the story and the who, what, where, why and when, are all mentioned usually in the first few sentences. After reading the text, I then read the newspaper and realized that the pyramid is used all the time. Another thing that I found useful in this chapter was the section on objectivity. Not having written to much in my life, I believe that this will be my biggest problem in writing a news story. To combat this, I will really have to be selective on what I do my paper on so that there are no pre-conceived biases on the subject. To totally eliminate “I’s” is going to be a tough concept to learn. I think that the most interesting thing to me in this chapter, and something that is new to me is the use of the telegraph. Starting with the civil war, the need to put the most detailed information first in their message, because they never knew how many details they would be able to share before the telegraph would break down or what not. That part really interested me because I had wondered why telegraphs were so choppy and front loaded with information. Overall, this whole chapter would be beneficial to anyone who had to write a story and wasn’t exactly clear on the format of it.
