Me The Writer

College has taught me many things.  I think one of the most important things I have learned in college is in the subject of English.  English is a very important subject.  Since communication is what I consider to be the way of survival, it is very important to acquire superior English skills and writing skills.  I have always thought that my writing skills were fair, but it wasn’t until this last semester that I learned how much I could improve my skills.   There are many things I learned this semester.  I think overall I have improved as a writer.  I had some opportunities to write about topics I have wanted to write about for a while.  Although not all of my papers I wrote were my favorite, they all have specific meaning behind them.  I learned different writing skills that improved my papers.  I also learned what processes worked for me and what ones didn’t.

There were many things I learned this semester.  One of the most important things I learned was how important it is to use primary and secondary support.  I never heard of using primary and secondary support in past papers I have written.  I think that using primary and secondary support when writing any kind of essay makes the essay 100% stronger and more interesting.  Another thing I learned was I have difficulties with repeating sentences and ideas.  I never really realized this before, until I sat down and read some of my essays.  I think this was a very important thing for me to learn, because it will improve my essays and other writings for the rest of my life.  I also learned how important it is to keep the same ideas in the same paragraphs.  It is very confusing when a writer jumps from one idea to the next.  I realized how much nicer an essay flows when the topics in each paragraph discuss the same ideas.  I learned how much more interesting and good my essays are when I wrote about something I had experience with.

The topics of my essays came from things I had experienced in life or was experiencing at that time.  Most of my ideas came from work, personal relationships, and decisions about school and where to live.  I chose these topics, because as a reader it is more interesting to read information when the writer knows a lot about the topic and has first hand experience, and I wanted to make the readers of my work interested.  My favorite piece I wrote would have to be my classification essay.  It is about how I classify the different families I come in contact with at work.  This essay is my favorite because it is something I care about and something I have to deal with every day I go to work.  My least favorite essay would have to be the persuasion essay.  This essay was the essay I had the most difficulty with and was the least interested in.  I think it was my least favorite, because I wasn’t very interested in the movie I chose, so I had a lot of trouble trying to persuade others, when I wasn’t interested myself.

There were things that worked for me in my writing processes and other things that didn’t.  I have never been a fan of pre writing.  I find that my best work happens when I just sit down at my computer and type my ideas.  After I have all my ideas typed out, I go through and edit the things that need to be changed.  Peer Review worked well for me this semester.  I really enjoyed the other people in my peer group.  They all brought wonderful suggestions and ideas up that allowed me to make some changes on my essay.  The ideas from my peer group made my essays stronger and much more interesting.  Another thing that helped me is when we had conferences with Steve.  I really enjoyed this; because it gave me the opportunity to get someone who has had years of experience, give me ideas and suggestions.

Overall there are many things I learned this semester.  I improved as a writer in many different aspects.  I know there are still a lot of things I can improve on, but I am very satisfied with where I am as a writer.  I have developed many different skills that I didn’t realize I was lacking.  I think that I am a lot better at forming ideas and giving adequate support to make my essays stronger.  I think this is a very important skill that I acquired.  Not only will this help me in future college courses, but also after college.  These skills will carry on and be important for me in my profession, when I have my own family, and if friends or family need help with writing skills.  I am very impressed and pleased with were I am as a writer.  I look forward to learning and improving my skills even more in the future.
