Accepted
Choosing a college is a tough decision for many people. There are many things that one has to keep in mind when deciding on a college. I was fresh out of high school. Trying to decide what college I wanted to attend, what major I wanted to be, and everything else. It was really rough. My parents were pressuring me. It seemed like they wanted me to make a million decisions right away. I felt a huge amount of pressure from my parents to get into a college and do well. I was really scared that I wouldn’t get accepted into any colleges, and my parents would look down upon me. They kept preaching to me to make sure that I apply to more than one college. I didn’t quite understand why they wanted me to apply to more than one. I had a little bit of an idea of where I wanted to go, so I didn’t understand why I should apply to more than one.
The movie “Accepted,” is a great movie for college students to watch. Many people who are in the process of getting into a college can relate to this movie. Accepted is an important movie for college students and even parents to watch because it gives hope to people who might have problems getting in to a college. This movie also might hit home for people who feel like their major isn’t important. It is a good movie for parents to watch because it has some excellent examples of how the amount of stress parents put on their son or daughter.
“ Accepted,” gives hope to people who have been rejected from college. The movie is based on the story of a boy named Bartleby, who gets turned down from every college he applies to. He feels a great amount of stress from his parents, which many people can relate to. His parents expect way too much from him, much like many college students today. He knew that if he told them he was rejected from every college he applied for, they would be very disappointed. Bartleby decides to create a college that he knows he will be accepted to. Although the idea of starting a pretend college up may seem a little unjust, the reasoning behind it is excellent. The college he starts makes people feel good about themselves for once in their life. The idea behind this college is no matter how many different schools they have been rejected from or what their major is, it is acceptable. The students that attend Bartleby’s college are considered to be losers or nerds in society, but at Bartleby’s college they are considered to be winners. This is important, because in the society today, the need to fit in and be accepted is vital. I think that as a college student, the fear of being rejected is very common.
Every person is his or her own individual. “Accepted,” does a wonderful job at showing that it is ok to be your own person, even if that is different than everyone else. Most colleges offer the same majors. Bartleby’s college is different. At this college it doesn’t matter what your major is. Everyone is accepted for being who he or she is, and what he or she wants to do is taken seriously, no matter what. I think more colleges should be like this. This is important for college students to watch because; it makes them feel like it is ok to be themselves. I think that people need encouragement, not put-downs or pressure. It is easier to learn in an atmosphere with people who are accepting of one’s decisions and encourage rather than discourage. I think that parents sometimes discourage their son or daughter by the amount of pressure they put on them.
This movie is important for college students’ parents to watch also. I think this movie shows how the pressure students feel from their parents, lead them to do crazy things, for instance make up their own college. It is difficult to decide on a college. It is a huge step to make. I think that sometimes parents don’t realize it is just as important for their son or daughter to choose a school, as them. Bartleby’s parents talk down upon him and call him a failure and loser, when they find out he has be denied from various schools. Bartleby felt like he had to prove to his parents that he wasn’t a failure or loser, so the only thing he could think of was to make up his own school. I know that some people might think that Bartleby isn’t a good role model because he lies to his parents, but it is because the amount of pressure parents put on their children. This illustrates that pressure felt by a student, could make them do something one might consider to be crazy.
Deciding on a college seems like a crazy process. I wish there was a college like Bartleby’s offered to me, when I was deciding on a college. I would have definitely chosen to go there, due to the amount of individualism offered. I also know I would have gotten in guaranteed. Since there is not college like Bartleby’s that I know of, I decided to go to LSC, Lake Superior College. I am happy with my decision. LSC has many things to offer people. It is very important to choose a couple different colleges, when applying. Since there is no college like Bartleby’s that I know of, it is rather impossible to know whether or not one will be accepted. This movie is excellent for college students and their parents to watch. Life is full of difficult decisions. I know that when I finally decided on a college and got accepted, it was a great joy. It made me feel like I achieved something. Little did I know how much work and time was involved.
