Mural Arrives on Campus
by Gary Kruchowski
It’s a like putting a giant jigsaw puzzle together!
LSC staff member Bill Holappa is busy unpacking 130 tiles that make up a ceramic mural that will soon be installed on campus. The work, “Stele,” by Wenzhi Zhang, a renownd ceramic artist from China, recently arrived on campus. The tiles were created in Zhang’s studio at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and shipped nearly half way around the earth via ship, rail, and truck.
The tiles must be unpacked and aligned so that exact measurements for installation can be made. Plans call for the work to be installed on the exterior of the new student services and academic building prior to the end of the semester. It will be approximately 30 feet tall and 13 feet wide.
The project was funded through the Minnesota Percent for Public Art Program, which funds major public art projects in and around state-owned buildings in areas that are accessible to the general public.

New Art Installation: Relic 3
by Gary Kruchowski
Another art installation took place on Friday, October 5. “Relic 3″ by Sam Spiczka now hangs in the main entry to the Academic and Student Services Building.
Here’s how Spiczka describes his work:
Visually, my work is inspired by the often unforgiving Minnesota landscape. In it, animal bones and rock formations are transformed into timeless memorials. Geometric forms are often merged with the organic as a symbol of our ability to transform not only our environment, but ourselves as well.
The piece is crafted from cor-ten steel, also know as “weathering steel” because of its low maintenance requirements and attractive rusty patina.
Spiczka is a noteworthy regional artist working out of Sartell, Minnesota. The piece was purchased with funds from the Minnesota Percent for Art in Public Places Program.
