THE STAFF AT LAKE SUPERIOR COLLEGE AND THE EXPERIENCES I HAD WITH THEM DURING ADMISSIONS
The staff at Lake Superior College and the experiences I had with them during the admission and registration period was sort of what I would call playing the board game of life.
My experience with Sandy Olin was a very positive one. I feel as though she really knows her job and is quite the informational resource person to come in contact with. When it comes to the financial aid system she would be a great resource. She directed and advised me to apply for the child care grant, which I didn’t even consider at the time.
The staff members that work under her are very knowledgeable and helpful also. They also have great knowledge in the financial aid department. Just by calling them on the phone, they can answer even what you would have thought to be the most difficult questions. The question I asked was, “Will financial aid pay if you want to repeat the same class over?” Her answer was yes , if I withdraw from the class before the withdrawal due date. I actually asked for their boss’s name so I could commend them on their job abilities.
The first time I went in to do place- ment testing; I didn’t need to show the staff any identification what so ever. They did not know me from Adam, as they say. (No pun intended, well maybe! Adam happens to be my son and is also in this class.) I guess they were in a hurry to get everyone in the room and get started on the testing. It didn’t matter to me because I know I’m an honest person, but there may be other students that would try this if they thought they could get away with it..I still think it was inappropriate of the staff to have not taken identification for the students taking the placement testing because anyone who had the mind to could have sent someone else in to do the placement testing for them.
Unfortunately I didn’t have a very good experience with the advisors at the registration orientation. LSC set up their advisor assistance for the students, where there were four advisors helping the whole room full of students all at the same time. The students needed to raise their hand and wait for help. When a student is there because they need professional advice, they shouldn’t have to sit there for thirty minutes waiting for an advisor to come over and assist them. I figured they would have given the students a more fair evaluation based on individual needs. I feel as though maybe some direction as to which classes were necessary or advisable to start out with, would have benefitted many of the peers attending the orientation. The advisors seemed somewhat unknowledgeable and actually gave me misinformation about the waiting period of time it took to get into the nursing program after my generals were completed.
Over all, I still find that the experience with the staff at Lake Superior College, was a very good experience ! I would highly recommend meeting as many staff members as possible to find out what they have to offer you as a student.
Life is like playing a board game, even if a student doesn’t know all the rules when they start and they venture out to someone who does know, then they may be able to find a link that can move them ahead in the board game of life, to reach their goals sooner, and win the game!
