Duluth, MN, is thinking about providing city workers who have lost there licenses due to drunk driving with alternative job positions so they may remain on the city payroll. As of today six city workers with heavy maintenace positions are out of work because they can’t drive, but none of them were pulled over while on the job. With a few city councel members asking why they should create new job positions for these six DWI offenders. One member of the council Mr. Stauber stated that if a person job involves driving and they cant perform that job then they should be removed from that position. He also said that we pay these people to drive and not to get DWI’s, so they should lose there job but not permananlty because once they get there license back then they may be able to return to work. If they were granted new jobs they would only be temporary and with a lower pay.

Minnesota lawmakers are trying to pass an agreement with Wisconson lawmakers over the topic that Wisconsin college students are paying less then Minnesota in-state students to attend Minnesota Universities. It has been proposed to take effect by the year 2006 that all students will pay equal tuition. As of today Wisconsin students pay about 2,000 less a year to attend Minnesota Universities then in-state students. A university of Minnesota official said about the lower rates for wisconsin studets as being “ridiculous”. Peter Zetterberg a analyst in the provosts office added that “we dont want wisconsin students to pay more but the same price as everyone else”.

Reading about news stories and hearing the example of the watergate scandal, helped me realize that a true reporters job is to get as much information and evidance on the topic to prove your point in your story. It was interesting to read more about watergate because before reading chapter six my knowledge on the topic wasn’t to good.

I definantly agree with the rules of finding a news story thats worth telling. A story should be somthing thats happening or already had happened in the world. It also states in chapter six that news reporters should know the topics relationship with people, like who it affects, for example does it affect a big group or a single individual.

I think that reporting the truth is important but I know that it would be really hard for a reporter to keep their ideas and opinions out of a article that their writing. For example I’m the type of person who likes to speak about whats on my mind and what I think of a specific situation so it would be difficult for me to keep my opinions out of a news article.

It was nice learning more about possible research methods that can be used when studying a news story. For example you can use interveiws, personal obervation, and documents. I think interveiws is a great way to to gather reseach because it gives a reporter the chance to talk to someone who has knowledge on the subject.

I thought this chapter provided alot of useful information about how to construct a news story and it also provided great examples of written stories by other people, which helped compare different styles in writing a news story.
