Then and Now

Communication is a necessity in every day life. Now, in the year two-thousand seven, we have many different ways of communicating with each other. Compared to the year nineteen seventy-eight, when my dad was my age, there weren’t as many options. In the past twenty-nine years, technology has changed so much. The old eight tracks are now cassette players, cd players, mp3 players, and iPods. Computers also came into our lives. Many people bought computers when they came into the market. Computers made it a lot easier to communicate quickly, through e-mail. Awhile after the computer came out, then the first cell phones came into the market. Cell phones were a big hit. They gave people the opportunity to call for help if they had car problems and there were no houses nearby. Cell phones also make it easier for parents to keep track of their children. The new Disney Mobile cell phone has some sort of tracking system so the parents always know where their kids are.

All of this new technology is good in many ways. Our communication has expanded quite a bit. When the computer was invented, a lot of people stopped writing letters and mailing them. Instead they began e-mailing each other, which was a lot quicker. E-mailing is like mailing a letter to someone, but it gets to them within the hour that you sent it. As compared to when my dad was my age, and all he had was the telephone, writing and mailing letters, and just making plans ahead of time. Answering machines were around back then, but I guess they were huge.

I also have my own cell phone, which my dad never had when he was my age, he never even dreamed of having one. My dad is now a proud owner of a cell phone, in fact everyone in my family has one. We wouldn’t even dream of not having one. It makes it a lot easier for all of us to communicate with each other in times of needs, for example, when one of us is having car trouble and may need help.

The news is also very important to most people. There are many different ways to see or hear the news. The newspaper is a big way to read the news, and yes they did have the newspaper back then, in fact my dad delivered it. The news is also on TV, which my dad did have. There are many different channels now days to watch the news, like channel six, three, and ten on regular TV, but if you have satellite you can watch CNN. My dad never had a satellite dish back then. Now days you can also look at many different websites on the internet to view the news.

In only twenty-nine years, communication has changed so much, from telephones to e-mail, then to cell phones. I don’t think it will ever stop changing. Communication is continuously growing. New inventions are being created, and within the next few years, we’ll probably have some other new way of communicating.
