Two of the main hot topics that I have encountered is:
-Mayor Bergson says he has a plan to help out with the 309 million retiree health-care liability.
This has been a huge disagreement for months. Finally Bergson came up with the idea of presenting the Minnesota State Senate with a Duluth-only bill that will help cut the liability in half. But even though Bergson came up with this good plan, not all the council members agree with it.
-Council passes Iraq measure
There has been a real debate that has surfaced about American troops in Iraq. Russ Stewart led the resolution in this discussion. They stated that they want Minnesota troops to be taken out of Iraq and brought back to their home. They are trying to clearly state that they are of full support of the troops, but they want Bush to end the occupation in Iraq.
When choosing news stories to write about you want to look at different concepts like what is an interests you. What I have found to be more important is the newsworthiness. Yes you want to find an event that is of interest, but to make it a good well thought through story you need these five steps. I thought these were some fascinating steps; considering I have never written an article along these guidelines. -timely story, how people are affected, local, famous somebody, and novelty. I also have not used the idea of objectivity. Since you see so many articles out there that promote their own opinions, it’s kind of hard to picture a real news article without some kind of an opinion. I didn’t know anything about the inverted pyramid even though I have used it many times even in regular papers. I believe that the example of Mascot Halted at San Diego State U was a very good example of how to use the inverted pyramid in your use of a news article or any other form of writing.
Overall the many different ways to write a news article with help me to a more well thought out and researched paper. This chapter gives a good idea of what we should use and include in our papers to make it more successful.
