Over? Did you say over?! Nothing is over until we decide it is!  For many years people have listened to this quote and laughed as they watched National Lampoons Animal House. As many of you may already know; Animal House is a comedy that takes you on a rollercoaster ride through college. Animal House won many awards it’s for stupid humor, but besides the drinking parties and drug abusing this movie teaches many lessons that all college students should learn.

One of the many reasons this movie should be discussed in this class is because it was groundbreaking. When Animal House came out back in 1978, no one had ever seen anything like it.  It is responsible for creating the “gross-out” genre, a genre where the producers aim to “gross-out” the audience with sexual or “toilet” humor.  Since Animal House came out the movies with this kind of humor have sky-rocketed in production and sales.  This should be discussed by college students because it shows how you can try something new and different and it could be very successful.  The world needs more innovators like the producers of this movie.  This movie was the blueprint for many more recent classics like There’s Something About Mary, the American Pie series, Eurotrip, Freddy Got Fingered, and the South Park Movie.  We might not have ever even heard of Steve-O or Jhonny Knoxville and the rest of the Jackass boys if it wasn’t for Animal House.  These movies are responsible for shaping our culture and for entertaining billions. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film “culturally significant” and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. This film is also first on Bravo’s “100 Funniest Movies”. It was #36 on AFI’s “100 Years, 100 Laughs” list of the 100 best American comedies. That is a major achievement.

Another reason this movie should be discussed in class is because it shows how you can become very wealthy by planning and budgeting well. Animal House had a very small $3 million budget, especially compared to these days where a lot of movies will top $200 million budget. They turned around and made over $200 million to date in sales.  That is a profit of over $197 million which made it one of the most profitable movies of all time according to wikapedia.org.  This shows college students that it doesn’t take a huge investment to make a quality product.  If you budget and plan carefully you can make something groundbreaking without breaking the bank.

While this movie is a classic groundbreaking film, there will always be critics of something that has touched so many lives.  The main argument critics give is that the “gross-out” genre is bad humor and makes fun of inappropriate things and that people weren’t ready for it.  This will always be the case with innovative things, some people might not like them or be ready for it.  Without innovation, though, nothing would ever get done and we wouldn’t experience new things.  Innovation is one of the things that makes the world a better place and there are always going to be costs to moving ahead.

In conclusion Animal House is a very good movie that teaches some good lessons about business and innovation that college students could definitely use in their everyday lives.
