English Comp 2007

Earlier this year I was looking over classes for this spring semester.  I signed up late and a lot of classes were full so there was very little for me to choose from.  English Comp. caught my eye though.  All through grade school I had enjoyed writing so I figured it would not be that hard of a class.  As the class got into full swing I quickly discovered my passion for writing again and looked forward to developing better writing skills.

To be perfectly honest I did not learn much that I did not already know over this past semester.  It was all just practice and getting back to the basics of writing.  I mean it has been about three years since I had written a paper. It all seemed to come back quickly and I received good grades on my first two papers.  After that they seemed to fall a bit and I wasn’t sure why.  As the semester went on I quickly realized that it was because I was not applying myself and I just figured I would get a good grade.  For my final paper I learned from my mistakes and actually took my time and I feel like I did a much better job on it.

One of the things that really helped me this semester that I had not done before was prewriting.  In high school I would never prewrite and just whip out a paper about twenty minutes before it was due.  I have discovered that seeing my ideas on a piece of paper made it a lot easier for me to put them down on paper.

Out of all the things we did I hated the idea of peer review the most.  No one ever seemed to give good advice and it seemed like a lot of essays went unchanged.  Also there were constantly problems loading stuff on the internet.  It just seemed like a bad idea for a first year college writing class.  Not everyone is developed enough as a writer and no one seems to want to make anyone feel bad about their essays.

Through out this semester I had learned quite a bit about my writing skills.  I have learned that I can be an excellent writer if I apply myself.  On the other hand though it is very hard for me to apply myself to writing and I seem to turn in papers that are below my standards.  My next writing classes I will try to push myself a little harder and hopefully come out of it with a better grade.
